At the moment- the Canon P. It's got a great viewfinder, accurate RF, and is an uncluttered design.

My ST605N meter is rather inaccurate (off by 2-3 stops). Is it because I'm using LR44 batteries in it? or is something broken?

This is a fantastic thread. I've very little experience with film SLRs, but have collected a few, sometimes just for the lens that it came with.

Anyway, my working line up:

Spotmatic SPii (liked it so much I bought a 2nd one)
Praktica TL3 (a gift from a forum member)

Project cameras that I want to try and get round to making usable:

Spotmatic SPF This one is in poor condition and it needs to be opened up. I don't like the open aperture metering and prefer the earlier models
Praktica MTL5 I really like this camera, but is has a sticking shutter (another gift)
Praktica MTL3 Bought with broken shutter for spares, but has the nicest look & feel of all my Prakticas
Zenit EM Bought for the lens. Nice looking camera but has a dirty viewfinder. Likely to go in the bin, but I do like Zenit cameras.
Praktica Super TL 1000 I bought this one for the lenses. Sadly the meter didn't work so will end up in the bin, but this had the a similar look to the MTL3

Fujica AZ-1

Fujica ST 605 N

Fujica ST 801

Praktica MTL 5

Praktica MTL 3 (broken shutter I bought this for the pancolar that it had).

I use Fujica AZ-1 (automatic aperture priority and 1/60, 1/250 and 1/1000 mechanical without battery).

All M42.

Rino.

Of all the film cameras I have owned and used, my absolute favourites were in the late-1980s when I have several B-series Prakticas. There was something about those cameras. You know how it is when you and a camera just really work well together? Well for me it was the Praktica B cameras. I adored it, I did my best photography ever. I had a similar experience with a Nikon F301.

In order of preference:

1. Praktica B series
2. Nikon F301
3. Ricoh 500G (I took it everywhere!)
4. Leica IIIa
5. Fed 4L
6. Mamiya C220

If I could own them all again but with digital, I would do so in a heartbeat
Cool

Hi graham,
yes, my AX-3 is close to mint, maybe mint -, there are a couple small spots but you have to look very, very close to notice them. This camera performs flawlessly. She's one of my favorite Fujicas with the the exception of the 801 and 705W.

Praktica fans seem rare here.

I have never understood why Confused The B series handled superbly, were small, fast to use, and had excellent optics. Very underrated, in my opinion. Like now, I used mine extensively with M42 lenses as well as zooms. Added to that, the older screw mount Prakticas were the camera many people started out with, there should at least be nostalgic fondness for them Cool

Erratic meter? Common in olds cams. I have a ST 605 N, I use it with LR44. All OK.

My erratic meter camera is ST 801.

I use handheld meter in incident way.

Hand held meter is the way I shoot at all times. I never rely on my cameras meter. Cool

Some said that the B series are less reliable than the L s , especially the last geberation (BX). Yes, the lenses are great being the system for which you could buy the cheapest Carl Zeiss Jena lenses . The drawback is that you can find less lenses for it (less brands, although the Pentacon & Zeiss is all you need) and there is no mechanical body with the PB bayonet (mount).

Don't know? Couldn't care less?? OK, either way it was a Kowa E, the year was 1963 and I was a 16 year old schoolkid! Very Happy

They come up on eBay from time to time but invariably with some problem for 'spares or repair'; there's one right now with a busted meter:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=270334449079&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=017

The meter was pretty much metering the sky mostly anyway, but the creepy seller has split the camera and its ERC into two separate auctions! (I hate when they do that!)

Keith, it's interesting that the Kowa was a fixed-lens camera! Actually, for 1963, it looks like it was a premium piece of equipment with very few "extra dials and levers" and an ordered simplicity.

I have two BC-1s - on the first one I made the mistake of using the motor drive which wrecked the shutter and the second I didn't...

This second body is now about twenty years old and was my main 35mm camera up until I got the 5D in '06. It still works. Cool

Well, I'm gonna update mine:

35mm SLR:
Konica T4 and Hexanon lenses
Nikon F
Ricoh XR-10M
Exakta 500 (forgot to add this one)
(I'm not in love with my two Canon Elan II and IIe although they
are versatile as to lens mount.)

35mm rangefinder:
Olympus XA

point and shoot 35mm:
Ricoh FF-90

120:
Ricohflex Dia L
Voigtlander Bessa RF 1937

Well, obviously I'm loving my Pentacon Six TL. I've also fell in love with the Kodak Retina IIa w/Schneider-Kreuznach Retina-Xenon 50/2 I got the other day for $5 Smile I think those two will be my "film" cams for a while.

My all time favorite camera I've used is the Minolta Maxxum 9xi. It fit like no other camera did in my hand, and it was a pleasure to use. I took a lot of flack for using a Minolta, but it was so worth it. Well built, fast AF, fast advance, fast shutter speed, high flash sync, wireless TTL flash - all those things back in 1992 were amazing.

Someday I will buy it again, and get that 85mm f1.4 with it...

Second place is a Nikon FM2n with the MD-12 motor drive.

1) Praktica BC1
2) Praktica MTL3

In my plan is now middle format camera - Flexaret (6x6)

I am pleased someone else likes the Praktica, especially the BC1 Very Happy

The Flexaret is a nice TLR. I had one in the 80s. I really liked the focusing lever under the lower lens, it made handling really nice.
