sorry for asking so many question about lenses Rolling Eyes but I just discover manual lenses and it's so fun. Anyway, I have been talking to a guy on email and he said he use the helios 44-2 58mm f2 to play with lens flares. Is that correct? and what lens do you know of that flares very easily? thank you for putting up with me...

Depends on what you mean by flare. Most single coated lenses that do not have recessed front element will flare pretty easily when pointed towards the sun, or a bright object.

If you mean internal reflections like so:

Then generally early zoom lenses have a tendency to do this, although it is possible on any lens with multiple elements. The more elements there are the more ghost images you will get.

Usually lens (wides) with a large convex front element, like my Mir 20, tend to flare a lot.
Again, very old lenses that are single coated or uncoated, are usually more prone to flare.

yes, I actually want more of an internal reflection, and also some of flaring. I'm trying something that have the flaring and look of maybe an anamorphic lens (of course you can't mimic the aspect ratio and exact type of flaring unique to anamorphic).

I love the way my old Super-Tak 28/3.5 flares. (the 58mm filter version)

Yes Helios 44-2 can flare a lot!

(that's an very extreme example, you can control it easily)

I made also some interesting potraits with that, but they are somewhere in the eternity of my external harddrive.

Adding a clear filter will also produce its own flare.

But make sure its a cheap one, the more expensive ones will have less flare of course!

The jupiter 9 is meant to flare pretty easily.

look for wideangles
look for old lenses
look for zooms

do you prefer any specific color for iris ghosts?
If the flares are blue you will hardly see them against blue skies
green ones will vanish when you include much vegetation in your frame.

I like the wide takumars for creative flares best:

For cool flares like these, you want kinda wide angles (40mm and less hopefully) and older more primitive coating technologies (so pre 1970's models).

Lens "reflections" like Mos6502 showed in his second shot can usually be obtained from any lens from the 1990's and prior and it's easier to line them up creatively from wide lenses stopped down a bit.
