I'm looking for a lens hood that would be practical and look nice on my mint condition Canon FD 85/1.2 SSC Aspherical. Canon never made a hood for this lens. Any recommendations?

My lens is the first version of the lens, not the later one you refer to. For some reason the BT-72 hood does not fit the older lens.

Quote from some old discussions I found on photo.net: "The early Aspherical SSC does not accept the Canon bayonet lens hood. The later red stripe 85mm f1.2 uses BT-72 hood. Canon never made a hood for the earliest 85mm f1.2 Asherical SSC version."

I don't really understand why the BT-72 wouldn't fit as both lenses have a filter thread of 72mm.

EDIT: The BT-72 seems to be a "snap-on" hood, it does not use the filter threads for attachement...

This one looks very practical indeed but the filter thread is the wrong diameter. Also, how would one know (without trying) that the lens would not vignette with this hood.

This was what I have been thinking to do. Problem is, I don't know the correct dimensions. If it is too short it's not effective and if it is too long the lens vignettes...

They have mentioned they are different size available, 72mm Click here to see on Ebay. You can ask them for the exact dimension. Even if they cause vignetting, you can use them on other lens.

If you want an hood will exactly fit your lens, buy a long metal hood and cut it in a lathe. It is not had to measure the length by puting a folded cardboard in front of your lens.

The eBay hood isn't that expensive so I might just try it. A metal whood would look much nicer on this classic lens though. Thanks for the cardboard tip also, I hadn't thought of that.

EDIT: I did buy the "Matin" hood. Will post a report once I get it.

So, here it is. "Matin Plastic lens Hood 72mm, Bajonett type". This is a two piece system, a metal ring goes into the filter threads and the plastic hood is attached to the ring. The ring has threads so that filters can be used with the hood. The hood can be reversed for storage. Quality wise the set seems ok, but I don't find it very attractive. I haven't tried this combo on a FF camera yet but it should be ok, i don't expext it to vignette. A good buy for about 10 euros including shipping.

How did you get on with this one? I'm looking for a screw in version as my plastic original is becoming loose.
I found this for r example,I might try it out.
