Inspired by Gaz, the SonicScot. I tried out Kolor Autopano Gig. Its an amazing program.
Previously I've used Photoshop CS5 to create Panoramas using the auto-align and auto-blend layers functions. For some photos its tricky.
here are a few that I've done / re-done in Autopano
Manchester, Corporation St. 5 photos taken vertically using my kit lens at 18mm
Manchester, The Express Building taken with my mobile phone. yesterday. 6 photos, three along the top and 3 along the bottom. This took me ages as I had to wait for the road to clear each time. The building was about 50 metres, if that from me.
I'd love to know how to correct the severe curvature on this picture
My wifes favourite, Kettlewell scarecrow festival. Taken with My Nikon d3200 and Nikkor 50mm lens. A mix of 12 photos taken over the space of a minute. I can see 5 pairs of 'twins' in this photo!
detail showing two of the twins
lastly, Lymm Church. Taken with the Nex and my Komine Vivitar 28mm f2.8. 14 photos were combined to make this
detail:
I'm going to dig out all the photos i took for panos and have a play.
I would appreciate some help regarding correcting the spherical distortion of the Express building. _________________ Hero in the 'messin-with-cameras-for-the-hell-of-it department'. Official. |

Love the sets of twins
Do you have Lightroom 5? (£60 upgrade from Lightroom 4) it has some new lens correction tools which might be suitable for this curvature. Otherwise, there's another program called, erm, PT lens, I think, something like that. It has a trial available, think it's 10 images you can fettle before having to pay for it. Buying it is just $25 anyway and it's designed just for this purpose.
And yeah, Autopano is amazing. I've just rendered a .hdr file from 21 images (7x3 bracketed shots) into a panorama, now I'm taking it to Photomatix to play with it. I don't use half the tools but what I do use is fantastic.

Cheers Gaz,
I've done some more and more playing about with this fine program. and discovered the projections control. I'll re-do the Express building.
I have lightroom 4 but I'm not about to fork out for an upgrade. However I'll look out for 'erm, PT lens' and have a 'fettle' with it in trial mode.
Of course This may all go when I get my lens turbo. But I find panoramas so exciting!

More panos, this one is a 19 shot pic of York minster. Shot on my NEX5 with my little Konica 35 38mm rangefinder lens.
the next photos are actual component shots from the pano.
The pano its self is 17500 pixels wide reduced to just 5000 for the forum. The others have been reduced too. You can see the scale from the picture of the entrance and look how Autopano giga has corrected the perspective. Minimal tweaking in photoshop.
taken from the tower of the minster just 8 images.
Another from behind the minster. A hotel and patrons enjoying the sun. This was taken on an ancient Sony digicam with the red date info carefully cloned out. Just 3 photos this one. The NEX battery died.
Taken in Łódź with my Pentax P&S 12 photos. One guy walked about 25m between shots can you spot him?

Great work Phil, you're really using the wide perspectives to good effect!
Correction of distortion I do with the Transform > Warp option in Photoshop, it's pretty useful. _________________ I don't care who designed it, who made it or what country it comes from - I just enjoy using it! |

A few more panos re-visited in auto pano giga.
Another photo, this is a pan taken on my Nikon kit lens at about 28mm.
The Archbank Bridge near Moffat, I love the way it has dealt with the water! image no.1 is a 9 image pan done in photoshop blend layers no 2 is 14 image pan done in auto pano. The far left of the image wasn't part of the original pano but I threw it into the mix along with a few others taken at the same time and Autopano has done a good job in blending them apart from the safety rail.
.
This one is taken in Scotland, I forget which Loch and castle there were so many! 7 image pano
an experimental 'narrow' pan of the above with a view to printing it.

This pano is made with several photos taken from roughly the same spot. My intention then was to get a dramatic photo of a wave splashing into the prom steps. I have experimented with different images and this combination works quite well. Some repair work was needed on the sky as the program does not like blank space.

You don't think, have you tried?
heres one a similar size to yours uploaded in its original size. 12775 x 9309. The 'Brenzier method' 20 image pan, actually 24 images as autopano made 2 pans that needed putting together.
if you click on the image you can magnify and get a full res. I didnt post this one before as the focus is slightly 'off' and the horizon is 'stepped' but it can be done,
most of my other photos can be'zoomed, in to too. Great work with the panos Ian, I think your investment in Autopano Giga has been worthwhile. Its great fun isnt it? _________________ Hero in the 'messin-with-cameras-for-the-hell-of-it department'. Official. |
