I bought a new Kiev 4a camera but it does not have a take up spool. Any solutions? Especially one you have used?
Thanks for replies. ....How about from an Exa camera?

I decided to add a photo of the camera. Sorry so late.Embarassed

I'm not an authority on 35mm Kievs and I really don't have much experience with them (except for one Kiev 4 which I own), but I think Kievs don't actually have their own take up spools. I just use the spool from the previous film and that works fine for me.

The Kiev spool has a slot at the bottom of the spool to take the tongue of the film. A normal 35mm spool from an old cassette will do the job but there is only a little slit in the centre.

Use one of these and tape the film tongue to it. I put my finger on the sticky tape first to reduce the 'tack' so when its rewound it will pull off the spool.

You can usually pick up a spool on ebay. I'll look I may have a spare in a broken camera...
Phil

edit: just looked both cameras have the spool missing sorry

How about using a Exa spool? I would have to load the film into the opposite side though.
Or I could pick one up on ebay.

I believe that is for the 4m and 4am models.
Mine is just 4a, an older model with removable take up spool.

sorry - I never understood the 4 - 4a - 4m -4am lettering,
I think the 4am should be 4ma. Smile

That makes sense.
BTW, is there someplace on the camera where the model is written?

Don't know.

But the plastic shutter time dial and hot shoe are easiest to spot?

EXa spool is perfect, I use it also everywhere include Kiev.

Thank you, Attila. I loaded some film in it. I am excited, this is a beautiful camera, although a bit worn and has a very nice rangefinder+viewfinder. The shutter seems to be operating properly. The lens is very nice. I need to write down the sunny 16 guide on a card and go out and shoot!

count speeds to half at least on a few frames, majority of them is slower without maintenance. works, works but 1/250 only 1/100 or similar.

I agree with this, mine was a little overexposing. But use sunny 16 for your film anyway, a little over exposure is better than under exposure and as you know, the film latitude will take care of everything else.

Okay, thanks for the tips.

Mike Elek solution works great!
I have an old FOMA spool with some masking tape ... no problem
