what a beautiful photograph,
perfect focus and amazingly sharp for a J9 wide open, perfect in every way
I like warm and it's great to know that you are looking for the perfect skin tone
Digital colors are a very complex matter I know little about, I have been wishing for more discussion of the differences of colors of different sensors. _________________ my photos on flickr: https://www.flickr.com/photos/kuuan/collections |

Lens technicalities aside, IMHO beautiful photograph of a gorgeous child. _________________

Still too risky. If everyone posted pics of their J-9 wide open, I would characterize it as the quality of this lens but to generalize is really the slippery slope. At this point, I will say it that the initial conditions were just right and you may have either a lucky lens or a better quality lens but I do not think there is enough information to draw much more than that, as almost everyone seems to be jumping to do. Post lots of pictures taken by the J-9 and then we can start drawing some conclusions. Everyone seems to not be getting that kind of IQ so I am skeptical it is purely the lens...., but of course, like always, everyone goes out and buys up every copy on the market because they are filthy rich and quick to jump on stuff, while dumping crap on the market.
Remind me never to buy lenses by people on this site, if that is what they are selfishly doing! |

The initial mistake I made however, was that where I thought that oil on the blades was a bad thing. |
It's a bad thing only for lenses that could work in auto aperture mode. The Russian lenses were all manual and had plenty of blades, so the oil is part of their build. AFAIK, it's intentional, not something that develops over time.
Can you post an image of your lens? I have a MC J9, but mine has a soft effect wide open and I thought all MC lenses are the same. The old silver ones were reputed to lack that effect, but this is the first time I hear of a newer J9 without the soft effect. _________________ http://www.ipernity.com/home/2419272

It is just too risky and other lenses are safer, not to mention way faster, for what I and most everyone I know's needs. Nice pic! Congrats! |
What lenses are way faster in this focal range? The only one i know of is the Canon 85 f/1.2 L lens, which isn't even remotely fair to compare the J-9 with (at least, as far as price range is concerned).
I personally love shooting with fast glass, and it seems like the only faster, comparably priced alternative to the J-9 is the Samyang/Vivitar/Rokinon 85/1.4
It's upsetting that the copy variance on the J-9 is so drastic, because when it's good, its very very good, as shown by JohnBee's beautiful portrait (as well as other great photos taken with this lens). That said, a good copy of this lens is still on my list of things to keep an eye out for _________________ Stills: SLR: Asahi Pentax Spotmatic SP, DSLR: Canon EOS Rebel XTi, Canon EOS 7D

Hello,
I will take a few images of the lens this evening, along with a few more samples from it(for good measure) :p |
