Could be. And 893 might be the production number within this newer plastic series. My first two digits are 89 and the lens is heavy - you would not be able to take it for plastic even if it looked that way.

Is your lens also made by LZOS (see here for logo image - a C within a circle and a triangle)?

Yes! It's a LZOS logo, very tiny and on the front edge. How do you know?

I think it is metal. I have a MC version with the same body and it doesn't look plastic, maybe it is the paint/coating finish feeling. I have a worn and faded I-61 L/Z which has the same finish and it is made from some kind of metal (aluminium?)...

Hum...... I am not convinced but I don't want to scratch the lens to prove it's plastic. Sad Sad

I have a 2002 (or 2003) version. The barrel is made of aluminum. Build quality is rather crude (at MFD it splits a bit so I can see the focusing thread), but it's aluminum, not plastic. It's a well-known fact that earlier versions were assembled to much tighter tolerances. My 2002 version has a glowing soft effect when used wide open; sharpens up quickly as stopped down. I also have an old 1957 build lens (M39 Zenit mount), and it is sharp straight from wide open. This is common behavior for old vs. new Jupiter 9's.

My lens at MFD also splits a bit so I can see the focusing thread! Sound like yours and mine are produced in the same year, so no reason to doubt that they are not made of same material. I am convinced it is metal now! Smile

I looked over my similar-looking and plastic-feeling MC Jupiter-9, and found that it does actually have a couple very tiny scratches on the focusing ring. Metal is showing underneath… So, I yeah, I'll concede that it's metal even though I always thought it to be plastic.

The paint must be thick because it really feels and looks so plastic! Wink Wink

Most of these seem to have been made by LZOS - just wanted to check if your was different. Also see this page for some J-9 information.

I think it is common for M42/SLR version vs LTM/RF version. My M42 copy from '89 behaves the same way. There are a few copies that are sharp wide open, but they seem to be an exception rather than a rule.

I've just acquired a similar-looking black Jupiter 9, LZOS made.

It has yellow coating, no MC written anywhere and a weird serial no. 4 56811116.

Anyone has a clue how old it can be?

Why wouldn't just try some magnet on it? Rolling Eyes Plastic dont react with magnets...

Aluminum doesn't either. I know for a fact it's made of aluminum because I had to disassemble mine, and undoing the grub screws around the focusing ring clearly revealed metal.

Can you post a picture of this lens? Yellow coatings were being applied to J9's from the end of 1970's and continued until final production (2003?) in non-MC versions. It's not bad of a coating by the way, with relatively thin color cast. Some of my earlier copies of J9 have the colors all over the place - like if they had a colored filter on them! My earliest lens (with purple front element) has a strong breen cast. The MC version has almost no color cast (maybe the colors are a bit cool, but I can't swear at that).

You know, its strange, because my "aluminum" Apple keyboard are can easy stuck some neodimium on body... ) For your truth - my Jupiter-11 can't. I thinking now, that Apple keyboard not really made by aluminum... Confused
