Is there a known quality difference between the two, as I am only going to keep one of them.
Take a look, your opinions please.
The one on the left is from the 4K and the right is from the 4

Looks like your 0 one is between PT3090 and PT3100 (PT3090 black body?) or simply name plate changed.
But glasses are the same, naturely _________________ Pierre

Looks lie the older one is a 3090 about 1969 (which ties in with the camera) sand the other is the last (regular) type they made 1974.
So the optics are the same. Ok I'll keep the 4K and its original lens.
Thanks for this info. I must have missed this link, there are so many when you do a general search. _________________ Hero in the 'messin-with-cameras-for-the-hell-of-it department'. Official. |

But there are other Jupiter-8 lenses which have much more different build and as far as I know there are also some with a noticable different optical design (Jupiter-8M 50/2).
In my subjective opinion older silver ones before 1968 are the better.

J-8M and J-8 are opticaly different, yes, but where are differences if you compare two Jupiter-8? Formula is the same, right? _________________ Pierre

I don't know if I understand your question. J8 and J8M have a slightly different optical formula
Classic Zeiss Sonnar 50/2 design for 35mm (should be the same as all J8 )
Quick draft of the Jupiter 8M 50/2 optical design:
All Jupiters and Industars after lets say 1970 have a lot quality spreading. Some are "good", some real lemons. Copy to copy variation is mostly bigger than the optical variation between the models, similar to Helios 44 lenses etc.. _________________ I'm not a collector, I'm a tester

Maybe I didn't understand your answer when you said "They are not the same". I understood that you meant his 2 Jupiter-8 had not the same formula.
I just answered that all Jupiter-8 have the same formula, BUT Jupiter-8 has not the same formula as Jupiter 8M.
In short :
Jupiter 8 = Jupiter 8
Jupiter 8 =/= Jupiter 8M
I agree about quality spreading, naturely _________________ Pierre

this is the correct syntax

Jupiter 8 != Jupiter 8M

The main difference is the paint. One is an earlier shiny paint version and the later one has mat paint. These are so called transitional versions. No difference in optical formula however. The only thing that might be different is the coating as the Russian might have changed it regards to the new "look".
From a collectors point of view the one with shiny paint is harder to find in good condition. In 3 years that I`ve been collecting Russian gear I have only seen a few that I would call mint or even minty, yet the mat ones come and go very often. _________________ I have many great Russian cameras and lenses for sale on my ebay account, please check it out: http://www.ebay.com/sch/piksius/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=25&_trksid=p3686

yeah there's some corrosion or bubbling under the gloss. good performer though. I'm getting rid of one. My head tells me keep the matt one as it's almost in new condition. _________________ Hero in the 'messin-with-cameras-for-the-hell-of-it department'. Official. |
