I've read that this lens is designed for a half-frame camera, and I'm not yet quite certain what that really means.

Assuming I find an M39 to EOS adapter, could I use one of these on a 7D or 5dII?

If the answer is yes, then that brings me to question #2: in this thread, it's mentioned that because of a 28.8mm flange, a slight modification was needed to get infinity working on this lens. What might that modification be?

No, it won't work, the register is too small by about 7mm.
