The Russian inscription "пластина нижняя" means something like "bottom plate". Of course it's a translation out of context, so I have no idea what this might be a plate of. _________________

Thankyou. I agree, doesn't tell us much. I thought, being in such a nice wooden box it might be a high end item of interest to someone. _________________ I don't care who designed it, who made it or what country it comes from - I just enjoy using it! |

Flat glass plate for interference measurements . Plate b / y in good condition. The plate is in a wooden box . Production of the USSR.
Plate used for checking flatness measuring surfaces of end measures , gauges , micrometers , gauges and instruments.
Flat glass plates are used to verify interference methods pritiraemosti and flatness measuring plane-parallel planes gauge blocks , gauges , instruments and tools. The plates are widely used in the tool industry, machine tools, instrumentation , engineering and many other industries . The plates are available in two types: the lower and upper . Lower (support ) of the plate used for checking pritiraemosti and flatness measuring surfaces gauge blocks , gauges , instruments and tools. The top plates are used for measuring plane-parallel gauge blocks technical interference method.
The plates are made of optical glass in the form of straight cylinders with flat end faces which are working .
Plates used for lapping them flat parallel gauge blocks with interference measurements , and also for testing the flatness measuring surfaces of end measures , calibers , micrometers , gauges and instruments.
Calibration plates produced according to GOST 8.215-76 |

It would thus seem this object is a quality control device of some sort. Maybe it was used on comparator-like machines? To all the naysayers out there, here is indisputable prof that there WAS QC in the Soviet Union. ![Very Happy](images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif) _________________

Ahh, but how flat is the cylinder? What QC was used to make it? _________________ Hero in the 'messin-with-cameras-for-the-hell-of-it department'. Official. |

And good for checking filter quality - how flatt theye are.
for this I have such an optical flat, but from Zeiss Jena.
Monochrome light, clean filter on clean optical flat, and one sees interference pattern. _________________ Camera modification, repair and DIY - some links to look through: http://www.4photos.de/camera-diy/index-en.html

I was about to say it was an optical flat but Klaus beat me to it. I find it quite interesting that optical flats can be used to check the quality of a lens or mirror optic down to the angstrom level.
1 angstrom = is a unit of length equal to 10^-10 m (one ten-billionth of a meter) or 0.1 nm.
The Soviets' QC may have been poor generally, but that was also generally not true with their optics. _________________ Michael
