Can you quote or link us to this "copy" talk. I’m thinking this may be a semantics misinterpretation. Thanks.
Industar 50/2 is supposedly based on a Tessar formula

It might be this one

I think that "copy" refers to the fact that it's a Soviet copy of the (German) design which is called "Tessar". Some listings on ebay describe it in this way. Other listings don't mention this fact - possibly because they don't know, or maybe they don't think that it's important.

I've only ever seen one type of Industar 50-2 listed on ebay - the black pancake with M42 mount for later Zenit.

On the other hand there are at least 4 variants of the Industar 50 :

1. Silver pancake - M39 for early Zenit
2. Silver pancake with built in adaper - M39 for Leica Rangefinder
3. Black version of #1
4. Black version of #2

The situation is complicated by carelessness in the listings. Thus the I50 is listed as I50-2 and vice versa.

We should stop using the terms COPY and NON-COPY as they don't make sense - there is only one optical design. And we should write the lens name properly: Industar 50-2, not 50/2, as this is the convention for noting the largest aperture size, which on this lens is f3.5.

Never heard of that. Were there Industar-50s for reproduction or projection?

The Industar 50 precedes the Industar 50-2. It was, for a time the "kit lens" on early Zenits (M39).
Edit. Sorry Carsten - I misread your question. I don't know.

John, do you happen to know if the adapter part on the RF version is removable? I was thinking about getting a RF version for the Zorki and wondering if it could be used without the adapter on a SLR. It can't be a plain extension ring as the RF version needs the moving "cam".

Peter, no I'm afraid that I don't. You can see all the variants simply by looking on ebay. My only direct experience of the Industar 50 is one (black pancake M39) which came with a Zenit E. It was fitted using a nicely machined (contemporary ?) brass M39-M42 ring. There is a site somewhere which describes all the variants of the I50 & I50-2 but I can't remember where it is.

OK, thanks anyway. There's only one way to find out then! Wink

Yes, it was that one.. i somehow interpreted it as "copy = industar name written in english on the lens, non-copy = russian alphabeth".. but thats not true as i understand..

thanx

Well if your looking for differences in Russian lenses that bear roman lettering and Cyrillic lettering I think most any information will be speculative. It has always been my impression that lenses that have roman lettering should in theory be better because they were meant for the export rather than domestic markets (same thing between "aus jena" and "carl zeiss jena"). Knowing the way the soviet system worked, the differences could potentially be greater than the German manufacturers, but again this is just speculation. There are bad and good samples in both arenas though and because of the age of most of these lenses, it's still just gamble.

Industar lenses are of Elmar optical formula relevants. One of the bests is the I-22 , which shows a superior contrast and definition than the Elmar 3,5/50 (Black scale) - I own the both - However the late"red scale" elmar are reputedly better.

Indeed, the type of writing does not indicate the lens design.
So either a lens model is a "copy" or not. Wink

I also have the I-50 ("3.5/5cm", M39SLR) and the I-50-2 ("3.5/50", M42) but I cannot see any difference in performance.
