How Common is a Hood for a 135/3.5 Tak?

Like this one:

Click here to see on Ebay

I was at my local camera shop today, digging through their junk bins, looking for caps to fit various lenses of mine that are missing them, and came across the above hood. It fits the 135/3.5, 150/4, and even the 200/5.6 Taks. Well, I don't own any of these lenses, so I pushed the hood aside, and kept digging through the caps and hoods and filters, etc. Then I came across it again, and pushed it out of the way again. So I'm digging some more, finding body caps and lens caps I can use, and dang it if I didn't come across that same hood again. Yeah it was a big pile I was sifting through, but why was that hood continuing to turn up? As I pushed it out of the way again, I look up and see two others, just like that one. Oooooh, so that's why.

Interesting, I'm thinking, how common is it to run across more than one piece like this in the same place, pieces that must be -- what? 40 years old? More? So I set the three hoods aside, and as I was digging, I came across another. Four? Kept digging and came across another one. Then another, and finally one more in a different bin. So this camera shop apparently has SEVEN of these hoods in its junk bins.

What are the odds?

I found one in a bargain bin while in Sydney...I think I got it for $2.50 or $5 I can't remember which...personally I would have bought them all for a good price.... Cool It would have been pretty good odds to find 7 of them! Did you buy them?

As I say on my site, the 135/3.5 is the easiest Takumar lens to complete, so its hood is very common (around 800.000 lenses produced that use the same hood) Wink

Every individual possible event is near-infinitely improbable, yet stuff happens anyway. Miracle!

A lot of these online stores get complete sets then break them up to sell individual parts for larger profit. Frustrating at times when you are trying to get the complete lens set.

I would have taken it as an omen to buy at least one Wink
even if you don't have the Taks, wouldn't it fit well on another lens of your's, Michael? after all it is a well built metal hood that fits any lens with a 49mm filter thread

Kuuan's right. I just wasn't thinking about my own gear. The only 49mm thread lens I own is my Tamron 90mm macro, and it just didn't occur to me to pick up one of those hoods for it. But I was definitely thinking about buying the lot. And now that I've thought about it some more, I think that's what I'll do. You can bargain with these folks on their used gear, especially the stuff in the junk bins. So I can probably pick up all seven for a decent price. Hell, yesterday I bought 20 caps -- body caps, front and rear lens caps -- for $12. I thought that was pretty fair.

good call! for this shop sounds like a gold mine!
tss..most places I know ask between 3 and 5 usd for ONE cap, 20 would be what? hurry and get them hoods for cheap Wink
and: in the part of the world I am now my hint would have earned me a commission of at least one hood Shocked ( true! but Michael..nevertheless only joking.. Laughing )

I hear ya. Houston's a big city -- 4th largest in the US -- but it has only two real camera shops left. And both of these places have junk bins and drawers that you can go through looking for cool stuff. Plus, like I mentioned, they'll deal on their used gear.

In one shop, they had a Nikon MD-2 motor drive with the MB-2 battery pack for $40. Excellent condition. So I had to buy it. Later in that same shop I found a remote cord for that drive -- the one that plugs into where the shutter release is, and then you plug the shutter release into the end of the cord. Got it and a couple other items for less than $20. Priced those cords on eBay lately? Found another remote cord at the same shop -- the one that plugs into the bottom of the drive, and the little remote switch that plugs in there as well -- for easier vertical shooting. Bought those two and a couple other things for less than $20. The list goes on. This was also the same shop where I made a package deal on my Canon 85mm f/1.2 SSC Asph, FL 55/1.2, Vivitar S1 28-90, and a Vivitar 2x macro TC. Got the lot for $350.

The other shop I don't visit as much because it isn't as conveniently located for me. But I've gotten some good deals out of that store as well. Picked up a Gossen Luna Pro SBC out of one of their junk bins for $5. They claimed it was 4 stops off, when the only problem with it was the EV dial was turned four stops away from its center line. Cool My Luna Pro F has a detent right there. The SBC doesn't, so it's easy for it to get moved. Also, I bought my Vivitar S1 105mm f/2.5 macro with a nice ring light flash from them for $200. Heck I've seen just the flash sell for more than that.

So anyway, we may have only two real camera shops left, but they still manage to keep folks like me entertained -- and drained. Cool

STOP IT Michael Mad
ehh, Houston is a big city you say? it must have a big airport then! any budget airline going? Wink

Hey Kuuan, yeah we have two international airports here. The one that handles most of the international flights is Bush Intercontinental. I dunno what sort of discount airline prices are around these days. But hey, it sounds to me like, if you want to look for really good deals, you should head north to Japan and cruise the second-hand shops. Yebisu keeps showing us amazing stuff he finds there.

hahahaaa, yes, of course Michael! Japan is a very good market, have sourced good part of my 'stuff' there really and I won't be able to resist fetching some more when there. happy hunting in Houston!
