hi
i just received the m42 and fd adapters for my new (used) canon 5d and i have been playing with it for a while and am confused by 3 things im hoping some members can help me with:

1 when i have my m42 adapter on with lens in AV setting the camera set 2.0 as the aperture and i cannot change it in any direction, regardless of minimum aperture value of lens (though i know this doesnt matter). thus, from f2 on lens to more open setting there is no change in shutter speed. is this normal,ie that the fastest i can shoot with 5d and m42 lens is 2.0 or am i doing something wrong?

2 although i have a focus confirm adapter, i receive no focus confirm at all (i will direct this question also to the adapter provider as well)

3 with my fd adapter the cameras aperture setting in AV is 0.0. however, once i step down past f8.0 there is no corresponding change in shutter speed, so from f8-16 i am at the same shutter speed though i can see the lens closing.

any insight that anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated!
thank you
tony

1. You have a fixed f/2.0 Adapter, that means, he will write this in the EXIFS not more.. you can shoot with any lens faster than that without any problem.

There are 2 kinds of confirmation Chips.

First one with fixed f/2.o and a second one so called EMF chip, where you can microadjust the confimation signal lamps in the Viewfinder in a heavy procedere of self-programming.

2. Is the "confirmation - beep" disabled in camera parameters?
If not, there must something wrong with the adapter..

3. f/0.0 means, the adapter hasnt contact to the corresponding pins in the cam

If you can not change the shutter speed, this could happen also, if you use a battery grip for the EOS 5D. I did had the same effect with a EOS 400D and a cheap battery grip. After switching off the additionally power switch on the grip, the shutter was free..

Maybe its the same on your 5D ?

Agree with hinnerker here:

1. if aperture only changes from f/2 to f/1.8, shutter speed is probably still in same EV range, so no change necessary. Change aperture from f/2 to f/1.4 should change shutter speed...

2. maybe not enough light to activate AF point(s). suggest try again on brighter scene.

3. sounds like chip is broken, or not properly mounted, missing the camera contacts. mount adapter on camera without lens and look inside to verify chip aligns with camera contacts.

There is (at least) one other AF chip; one of mine gives f/1.8

Um, you should never need (or be able to) change the aperture on the camera, this should be kept at the adapter default e.g. f2.0. You only need to be changing the aperture value on the lens. Once you change the aperture value on the lens, the camera should sort out the shutter speed for you. If it doesn't, something's gone wrong with the camera or you are using a strange metering mode I would imagine.

However, given that the focus confirm doesn't seem to work, it sounds like there's a problem with the chip. I'm not aware that this should bugger up metering however, unless someone knows better?

To get focus confirmation I believe you have to chance this in the menu:

C.Fn - 04 chance to 1.

You must set the aperture ring of the lens under f8 to have sufficeint light so that the confirm lamps work. When you're in focus, lights turn to red in the view finder. Then, close your diaph to the wanted aperture.

With the 40D set to Av priority, I notice that I have to compensate exposure when I close the diaph. -1/3 IL for each stop : 4=-1/3 5.6=-2/3 8=-1 11=-1 1/3 16=-1 2/3 22=-2.
The AF confirm chip is set to 2.0. So the Eos camera thinks the aperture is set to 2.0 which is false when, for instance, you set it to f8 on the lens. So you have to compensate by rotating the rear wheel.

Henry (aka Hinnerker) adviced me to set the camera to M. Give it a try.
The light measure is better this way.

thanks everyone for your help. after much, much, much experimentation i found that to achieve autoconfirm i had to change the following C-Fn settings: 04 set to 0; 16 set to 0. it seems both those need to be set.

re the FD adapter, that was a different issue as i use the camera further. the lens, a vivitar 17=28mm, simply does not stop down properly when attached to the adapter--actually it doesnt stop down at all. i think that may be an adapter problem as well as the aperture reading is 0.0 whenever i attach it to the camera.

any other thoughts would be appreciated.
thanks
