HELP! MIR 24 (35mm f/2) lens

PostPosted: Wed May 26, 2010 11:55 pm    Post subject: HELP! MIR 24 (35mm f/2) lens Reply with quote

I bought a MIR 24 (35mm f/2) M42 mount lens and it appears to either be messed up or out of adjustment.

When I install the EOS adapter, it screws down and pinches the tabs that stick up from the aperture ring. I have a friend who has the same lens and his doesn't have this problem. He has a small gap between the tabs and the adapter so his aperture ring moves freely.

The EOS adapter is fotodiox and it works fine on the other 2 lenses I bought.

here are a few pics to hopefully illustrate the problem.

this image shows the height of the aperture tabs campared to the back surface (B) of the lens. It appears that the adapter should screw down flush to the (B) surface but it can't because it's hitting the aperture tab (A)

this image shows the tab sticking up and pinching against the EOS adapter.

this image shows where the 2 tabs are. these are part of the aperture ring.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks,
Scott

have you tried with other m42 adapter? I have mir24 in nikon mount, so cannot help by testing.

Actually I don't see any problem if you pile down that area, specially if you are not planning to resell this lens.

Test it if the focus goes over the infinity, if it does, you can add a spacer between adapter and lens, try with electric tape first.

thanks for the response. I've only tried one brand because I bought 3 of them so I could have one for each lens I have.. the other 2 lenses work fine regardless of which adapter I use.

Out of curiosity.. what nikon adapter are you using with your lens? I just saw a nikon mount version of this lens so I may return this one and get a different one if I can't get it to work...

This'll sound dumb but I've never actually checked a lens for infinity focus so I'm still trying to figure out how to test that...

Any chance you might know where I can get a spacer that will fit the m42 mount?

Ah, the popular problem! You need this adapter (and only this adapter works with Ukrainian lenses that were supplied with both Nikon and M42 mounts): Click here to see on Ebay

I had the same issue with my Kaleinar-5N that came with an M42 mount. Fortunately, this Ukrainian-made adapter fits nicely.

Hmm.. the only thing is, I have a friend with the exact same lens and his works fine with the exact same adapter I'm using... Fotodiox makes that adapter as well.. says it's for autofocus which this lens is not...? from the looks that adapter will have the exact same problem as the one I'm using already...

It won't, because it has a small "step" on the inner side of the adapter (one that connects to the lens):

This basically leaves space for clearing the Nikon AI tab (which is the part that blocks the way in your case).

The adapter I recommend addresses exactly this problem. I mean... I have Kaleinar-5N with M42 mount, and it has exactly the same problem with other M42 adapters, NO problem with this adapter.

Does your friend have Mir-24H or Mir-24M? Can you send a photo of the mount of his lens?

His is a 24M. Not sure what that means though... so these can be both Nikon AND m42? Sorry but I'm very new to all these lenses...

Far as I know, 24M is M42 and 24H is Nikon mount

My 24M is a dedicated M42 lens made by KMZ and it looks nothing like that one at all. The focus ring is scalloped design, there is only one row of numbers for the aperture settings and there are none of those tabs. Here's a picture of it:
http://forum.mflenses.com/fast-normal-lens-for-pentax-dslr-wide-for-35mm-t6890,highlight,mir+24m,start,13.html

I'm certain what you have is a 24H even though you say it's 24M. Just google pics for 24H and you'll see. This lens was supplied new with two exchangeable mounts, similar to T-mount, for Nikon and M42 cameras. Your lens is fitted with the M42 mount, which is suitable for some Zenit cameras but not always for modern adapters.

I've never had one these in my hands to examine, but it looks to me as though the outer diameter of your adapter needs to be smaller, in order to fit inside the projecting tabs.

Mir 24n lenses those are also supplied with the m42 mount have nikon AI tab.
At least mine has. Othervise you can'nt just interchange mounts and use the lens on nikon slrs.

Regards.

The mir lenses out of the Ukraine shipped new with both the nikon and M42 lens mounts which the user was expected to swap if necessary.

If you bought it used, you probably did not get the complete kit. I am a good example - I sold my 8mm FE in M42 ... and belatedly realised I am still holding the nikon mount that came with it!

The tab you see (along with the second aperture series on the ring) are AI tabs intended for the nikon cameras when the nikon mount is fitted.

The m42 mount was originally designed for you to use the lens on an M42 mount camera, in which case the tabs do not interfere with anything.

Therefore - you probably have to buy the specialised adapter mentioned earlier if you want a proper adapter for this lens to EOS.

Your alternative is to find a nikon mount and swap it, then use a nikon/eos adapter.

else, file down the tabs ... which would then render the incapable of ever being used on a nikon camera again where metering is concerned.

At this point I've decided to file down the tabs. Thank you everyone for helping me with this problem.

Hello,

sorry to revive this thread one year and a half later but I figure it would be better than starting a new one. I have the same problem as the original poster - just purchased mir 24N in m42 mount and my m42-canon adapters do not fit because of those two tabs on the back of the lens.

I see that there was a link to some Ukrainian made adapter that solves this issue but the link is dead. Does anyone happen to know what kind of adapter I should look for?

Thanks

It was this seller http://www.ebay.com/sch/h_o_h_o_l/m.html?_adv=1&_dmd=1&_in_kw=1&_ipg=50&_sop=16&_rdc=1 - but they seem out of stock on this adapter...
