I'm surprised no one already proposed the Zenitar-M 50mm/1.7, one of the best russian 50mm M42 lens for me, if you're not fan of Helios-44 biotar rendering.

I am a fan of the helios' character, but I find the Zenitar-M a better lens overall, and I agree about it being possibly the best russian SLR normal.

Another lens that wasn't mentioned, and that's really good for me is the Mir10A 3.5/28: it's fairly uncommon, so not always really cheap.

However, back to the original topic's question, basically all russian SLR lenses are at least good, and all of them are bargains considering price/optical quality.

my Russian lenses are:

Mir-1 (37mm f/2,Cool - for me nice lens for landscapes
Volna-9 (50mm f/2.8 macro) - just acquired it and have yet to try it but it's famed as great macro lens
Jupiter-21 (200mm f/4) - absolute favorite of mine
Industar 50-2 (50mm f/3,5) - miniature in size , nice performance
Industar 61LZ (50mm f/2.Cool - razor sharp, useful as a macro lens
Tair 3 (300mm f/4,5) - sharp telephoto lens, but heavy, not really suitable to put on E-P1
several Helios 44 (58mm f/2)

Yes, you hit the nail on the head, but also:
===========================
Zenitar 1.7/50 (better than helios 44-2 in many situations, and a good prime for anamorphic lenses too)
Helios 40 1.5/85 (but quite big)
Mir 20M 3.5/20 (Right up there with my Zeiss 3.5/18 Distagon at a fraction of the price)
Mir 1b 2.8/37 (great bang for buck)
Industar 3.5/50 (M39, perhaps off topic but really worth a mention, its the Elmar copy, looks and feels crap, but is super sharp)
Jupiter 9 2/85 (but Helios 40 is better)
Jupiter 3 1.5/50 (not as cheap as other Russian lenses, for a good reason)
Jupiter 8 2/50 (a great standard lens)
Jupiter 37A 3.5/135 (very sharp for its focal length)
Never mind the size of the Tair 300FS, its a cracker of a lens.

at the time of the post you quoted , those lenses i mentioned were the lenses i owned. in the meanwhile i acquired several other russian lenses like black helios 40-2 , silver slr jupiter 9 85mm/2 , jupiter 11a 135mm/4, tair 11a 135mm/2.8 , industar 22 50mm/3.5 , helios 77m-4 50mm/1.8 , Industar 61 L/D

ASPH means aspherical, i.e. who's surface not part of a sphere, think of the pointy end of an egg, thats aspherical

burrencrawler already mentioned it as Zenitar 1.7/50

And the Zenitar-ME1 50/1.7 should be listed too, it's very rare and expensive but I never regret buying it. It's very unique and produces high IQ images!

A few more:

Peleng MC 8/3.5
Peleng MC 17/2.8
Arsat MC (Zodiak-8 ) 30/3.5
Mir 24N 35/2
Jupiter-3 50/1.5
Jupiter-6 180/2.8
Kaleinar-5N MC 100/2.8
Kaleinar-3B 150/2.8
Jupiter-36 250/3.5

Granit-11 4.5 80-200 (M42) - heavy bad performer lens (at least mine is)
MTO 1000A (M42) - beautiful tele lens
Tair-3-Phs (M42) - great but heavy hard to use
MIR-1 2.8/37A (M42) - very sharp but rare lens (my favourite)
MIR-1V 2.8/37 (M42) - great lens
Industar I-26M 2.8/52 (M39) - don't like it Smile
Industar 69 (chaika M39) 2.8/28 - with good adaptation, nice art lens
Helios 44M(-4) M42 - have few, nice all-around lenses
Helios 44-2 M42 - slightly different but also very nice lens
