Of course the Mk II is a better cam than the 5D classic.
But as long as my 5D classic works well, I would never upgrade, rather invest in better lenses - if I wanted to spend some money. |
+1, I tried the 5D II and decided it wasn't actually that different! What I would love is the newer screen though. I really don't use liveview unless I'm at home shooting things on tables. There's only been a couple of occasions where I've needed better ISO 3200, so I've just not needed to move.
The a850 / a900 is an interesting alternative, but I wouldn't want to convert all my C/Y lenses. I'm sure it's a nice camera though, I've never disliked any of the Sonys I've owner (a100, a200, a450). |

How efficient is the sensor cleaning is a MK2? Need never be cleaned by hand? DC is a good vacuum cleaner and I'm tired of it constantly. _________________ Anselm Adams: “A great photograph is one that fully expresses what one feels, in the deepest sense, about what is being photographed.”

Bought 5DII two, maybe 3 months ago. Rocket blower languishes unused in cupboard. Honestly, never had the need to even think about blowing dust about. _________________ I used to think digital was fun but then I discovered film, then I found old lenses and then, eventually I found rangefinders.

Actually, have you considered renting both bodies and testing them for a few days? Not sure where you live but I rent the a900 in Canada. I know that there are a few rental stores in the US that will ship the cameras to you, it's not that expensive, my a900 goes for $125 for 4 days, some what similar prices in the US. |

Also, since you guys like manual focus, Sony has a very unique lens that is known as the king of the bokeh, STF 135 2.8(4.5). It's manual focus because of the way it was designed, the background transitions are so smooth that the AF system won't work with them. Read about it, it was carried over from minolta and is considered the too lens in the world for smooth background. |

This is new to me. It looks superb indeed!

But for the price, I wonder if you be better off with a Canon FD 85mm f1.2 L converted, or Samyang 85mm f1.4, or just get the 105mm DC Nikkor?

Hi
I had the 5D, so from my experience : very good IQ, accepts MANY M42's this one good reason, ok the preview screen is crap, but once on the computer you don't complain Remind that this tool wasn't present before and everyone dealt with
Now switching for a 5D2, if you don't need high iso or video or LV, keep your 5D
or get a D700 : ) _________________ Happy owner and user of :

If you do consider going with the A900, I do recommend you buy a used body since there most likely will be a new FF coming from Sony by the end of the year or at most early 2012. Judging by how Sony improved the sensor noise in the NEX 3 from around 830 (maximum usable ISO) to around 1083 in the NEX 3C, we can expect that the new FF will have a good noise improvement with the new 30MP+ sensor. |

You can get more information about it here:

I don't really think the comparison to those lenses makes much sense, each lens really does serve a different purpose. For many photographers, this is an ideal FL for portraits. If you are willing to live with manual focus (not shooting moving objects) and you care about creamy backgrounds, then this is a good choice, read the reviews. I don't think you can find the minolta version anywhere so the Sony version is the only choice. |

I have thought about it, but £200 for renting two cameras - I can buy a lot of lenses for that! |
