To me, the definitive list (of those I own) looks like that:
- Nikkor 20mm F4
(best wide angle prime I know, wonderful textures and contrasts)
- Mamiya Sekor/SX 28m F2,8
(great sharpness, best colours from a lens I ever saw)
- Nikkor 50mm F2 Ai
(sharpest lens I know, image character surprisingly similar to the 20mm F4)
- Nikkor 200mm F4
(very sharp tele prime, could be a little more contrasty, but it is so cheap to have that there is no reason not to have one or sell it)
- AF-Nikkor 24mm F2,8
(nice AF prime, great resolution especially in closer distances, no flaws except for slight CAs wide open, optically unchanged from the 24mm F2,8 Ais, for 120€ a real keeper, I use it on the D50 like the classic 35mm on film)
- AF-Nikkor 28-105mm F3,5-4,5D IF
(I would never have expected such an image quality from a zoom. I was a prime lens fan before I discovered the advantages of manual focus lenses in detail, but this lens is one of those great exceptions which prove the rule. I love it as a travel lens, for shots out of the car, for every purpose where variability counts.)
I´m curious if there will be additions to this list in the near future, I would like to be able to add a 35er, but my budget is a bit restricted at this time.
Greetings
