When I read the title, I first thought: "Are there any others?" Wink
But the Roman Catholic church is not there yet. Laughing

In this part of Alabama that type of Cardinal is scarcer than hens teeth! LOL

LOL. I love cardinals, my wife had one she brought up from an infant (must have fallen out of the nest) when she was young. Unfortunately I haven't managed to get a decent or even half decent photo of one, much less the excellent ones in this thread!

What focal length are these at?

I used a Pentax K10D camera with a Sigma 50-500 APO EX DG lens stacked on a Sigma 1.4X APO EX DG matched TC for a total focal length in 35mm equivalence of 1080mm. All were shot hand held while sitting in my rocking chair on my front porch, and at 25-30 feet distance.

They are nice, but I think with a tripod your shots at this focal length would be much nicer. I don't use my DSLR for birds because it has no IS. I still use my old Panasonic FZ30 with or without a 1.7X converter. It does OK I think, although these are only good as web sized images.

Why do the males have their crests "down" this time of year? Isn't mating season coming soon?

Although...most already have a mate so they don't have to impress as much...at least I rarely see a lone cardinal...

yes funny how males make less of an attempt with their plumage when they have secured a mate... hmmmm Laughing

As a single male, I wasn't going to go there Laughing Laughing

The tripod will come later. My main purpose was to get as good as I can without one. I have 11 grandkids and 1 great grandchild and I want to be able to photograph them . I figured small birds would be a good exercise.
