what do y'all think of my idea?
i am very seriously thinking of buying an ex or ex+ body from KEH, and a pancake from ebay for a compact slr rig to use beside my f2a and standard nikkor 50/2. this will be very RF-like in size but more versatile, with access to lots of good glass that doesn't cost an arm and two legs such as good RF glass.

Well remember Nikon cameras have problems with M42 lenses...so you'll have to get another camera to use em.

Paul, why not? Though for you the rf seems to work out photographically well, there's no reason the Nikon won't work for you.

I think with the Fm2n you have to get Ai Nikkors, with the earlier FM/FE you can use pre-Ai's as well (cheaper) if you can remember how to work the dang metering Wink

yes, it's ai, Jussi. and ai-s lenses work just fine on my f2a. a 24 or 28, plus the pancake are about all i'd need. i much like to shoot abstracts inside of three feet, which is why i like the versatality of the slr; i can get a couple of feet closer if need be. also, the f2a gives 100-percent field of view framing, the fm2n 96-97 percent; no parallax error.
i still have RFs: konica s III, lynx-1000, minolta a5 - and my r2m. i just looked at some photos shot with my former j-8, and i was struck by the rendering. perhaps i should just drop the hammer on a good j-8 with m-adapter, shimmed for the r2m ...

All the more reason to go with it. I have an Ai'd 24 Nikkor, and it is a very nice lens indeed. For me, in the typical walking around situation auto exposure isn't great - the wide fov takes in too much sky and leaves the ground too dark, especially with slide film. When I go for another walk with my FE it will be in manual mode Wink
