Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts - positive or negative - about the first-generation Minolta SLR lenses: the ones sold with the SR-2 and SR-1.

I've checked online reference sources, and found some useful information about lens models and features, but there doesn't seem to be a great deal of discussion, one way or another, about their actual performance.

Just curious - given a choice, I tend to gravitate toward earlier lenses (preferring, say, Canon FL over FD), notwithstanding later improvements in coatings, etc.

Thanks!

PS Profound apologies for the double post. Pages are still loading very slowly for me, and I must have inadvertently hit "submit" twice. Admins, please feel free to delete one of these!

Jon

minolta mc/md lenses has huge list! You can refer to rokkorfiles.com for more information and review of many rokkor lenses: http://www.rokkorfiles.com/Lens%20Reviews.html

But finally it comes down to what camera system you have currently and how are you planning to mount these lenses on it.

Please look at this site too: http://www3.ns.sympatico.ca/mciepl/chronology.htm

One of earliest lens is Auto Rokkor-PF 55/1,8
This lens scores quite a good resolution, see this: http://www.pbase.com/kkawakami/rokkor_lens_resolutions

My humble samples in here: http://www.pbase.com/kkawakami/rokkor_auto_pf_55mm_f18

This lens has a locked aperture ring, you have to unlock to rotate the ring every time you want to change F-stop.
Some more examples are on FreadMirand site, guy called "Bifurcator" uploards his examples too at the thread
"ROKKOR Normal-ish Image Thread" on "Alternative Gear & Lenses" section.

Some of the SR1 lenses are orphan lenses. They didn't build them in other series.
They are some great early lenses. I think there designs were more elegant.
I see websites that try to compare early verses late lenses, but how can you do it and be fair. They are different lenses! In some cases the
number of groups and elements is different. So it's not just a case of different coatings.

I shoot mostly with Rokkor X or MD Gen 2 lenses. The main reason it's easier to find in mint condition and cheaper.
I try not to go past Gen 2 lenses because build quality drops.
Also I shoot with a X370 so the newer lighter lenses are nice.

When I pick up a SRT, I will start buying more early lenses and post tests with them.

Hi All,

Sorry to be slow to reply.

Thanks to all of you for the very helpful insights - and the very helpful links. I had a rough-and-ready familiarity (as familiar as a non-Minolta-user can be) with the MC and MD lenses, but I knew next-to-nothing about the earliest series. I'm happy to begin to remedy that gap in my knowledge.

Cheers,

Jon

On my SR-1 sits a 55mm 2.0 (MFD 0.5m, filter 52mm). Long ago, in the sixties, my standard lens, not bad at all. But now I have no digital samples and the lens doesn't fit on my DSLR. So I would have to make some macros or pictures on film to scan to get some samples.
