I own a Takumar SMC 300 F4.....I know it's not that fast, but it didn't cost fast money either.
But really, I've never had a problem with it, all my images have been sharp...I'm into cars, & I've had shots with this lens enlarged, still with no problems..always nice & sharp......unless of course....I've made a boo boo.....which does happen!
Cheers, Pickles.

Cafe racer based on the XS 650, very interesting indeed.
As for a reasonably fast 300mm lens, I'd go with Attilla's suggestion of the Tair 300A.

Hmmm . . . this guy is suggesting that that lens is a Fluorite lens. My experience with Canon Fluorite lenses is they have the green stripe. Sometimes Canon has included a fluorite element in their lens designs, and didn't really trumpet the fact. But I wasn't aware that the old 300/4 SSC had a fluorite element. Can anyone here confirm this?

I've owned a couple of the New FD 300/4s with internal focusing, and honestly can't recommend them. Too bad, too, because they're beautifully made lenses. I found mine to have excessive amounts of CA, especially green and purple fringing. The lens I used the most was still very usable and I took some great shots with it, but I just had to be careful about some types of shots -- like shooting a subject with vertical lines in strong sunlight for example. Now, the old SSC without IF might not have this same problem, so my comments may not apply.

That 300/4 Tak sounds interesting. Right now, the only 300mm I have is a Tamron zoom. It would be nice to have a prime. I could adapt an M42 to my Canon FD, Nikon and EOS systems. Sounds like M42 might be a good way to go. Did some eBay searching on M42 300mm lenses. Lots of f/5.6's. Looks like the Tair is the most economical f/4-something at this point in time. Found a Sankor in the UK with fungus on the rear element. Anybody know anything about Sankor -- like was this a label or a manufacturer, or?

Sankor was a manufacturer.I don't see there lenses very often. I know they made some lenses for Spirotone, and Accura. There are members on this forum with Sankor lenses.

Is the one you found like this one.

I find it kind of hard to believe that the lens really would have fluorite. It's a breech lock model, but there are BL models of the 300/4 L too, which doesn't even have fluorite but two UD elements.
There's no info on this particular lens here unfortunately: http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/companies/canon/fdresources/fdlenses/300mm.htm

The Canon 300/4L uses UD elements but no Flourite. (Both FD and EF.) Both are very nice lenses, but a small step down from the 300/2.8L in every way, in my opinion. It will probably be hard to beat in the focal length.

I've used the Super Takumar 300/4. It has a long minimum-focus distance, and a lot of CA. A lot.

I used the Nikkor 300/4.5 years ago. It's been too long for me to comment on image quality. I remember the standard lens being kind of clunky, and the ED-IF being smaller and easier to handle.

Ha! It's me that's selling that one Laughing I need to replace it Wink I don't know whether it's the fungus or not, but it's quite soft wide open. Stopped down it's as good as the other 300mms, probably OK for low light emergencies Smile

Update: I won a Canon EF 300/4L last night for a decent price (£400.00), so I think my quest is over Smile Thanks for all the suggestions!
