I recently acquired the Eyemik Ultra Multi-Coated Zoom 40-85mm f/3.5 and wanted to test its performance. I wasn't expecting miracles, but was curious by nature.

The lens is heavy and gives a solid feeling. It's an all-metal lens "from those times" and reaches the 40-85mm zoom area. I used this M42-threaded lens on a Pentax K100D, which has a 1.5x crop factor (thus FOV ~60-130mm). Max. aperture is 3.5 and smallest is 16 (aperture settings on lens: f/3.5, f/5.6, f/8, f/11 and f/16). It allows focus from 1.5 m to infinity. Further, filter thread is 67mm.

Here are two pictures of the lens:

All photographs have been made handheld. Some sample shots (no digital manipulation other than resizing/jpeg saving):

@40mm f/3.5, ISO200, 1/2000 sec

@40mm f/8, ISO200, 1/320 sec

@40mm f/16, ISO200, 1/50 sec

100% crop from previous photograph

@85mm f/8, ISO200, 1/50 sec

100% crop from previous photograph

@85mm, f/11, ISO200, 1/40 sec

100% crop from previous photograph

@85mm, f/3.5, ISO200, 1/200 sec

100% crop from previous image

@85mm, f/3.5, ISO200, 1/800 sec

Hi fotomachi,
This Eyemik doesn't look good to me.
The 100% at 1/50s have maybe blur but the last crop wide open look bad to me.
The bokeh look nice

As I say at the first time this is not a keeper lens, one of the worst what I seen, good to know. Many thanks for sharing!

It depends what you expect from this lens. Of course it will not come close to prime lenses, but an effective 60-128 mm lens can be useful for portraits...

Such a lens indeed is useful, but I'd prefer my glass to be of better quality than this. Personally, I didn't expect much and did this test out of curiousity. Because I didn't find anything useful on the internet, I decided to post a few pictures so everybody is warned... Smile I will probably disassemble the lens, use the M42 mount for something else and take a look at the optics. If someone wants to save the lens from euthanasia, this is your chance...

I don't think it's blur, but rather CA. In the other crops, blue fringing is also easy to spot.

Thank you again for this test report!

Thanks fotomachi - it is extremely valuable for us all to know which lenses to avoid. Can I suggest in this range that you look for a kiron 28-85 or 28-105. They are excellent mechanically and optically.

Thanks for the suggestions, though I must admit that I don't see Kiron lenses appearing often on second hand market places here.

I decided to doubt your conclusions and just buy me a sample. It seems pretty rare focal length range and good built. I want to give it a second chance Smile.
