I finally started my 5D's mirror shaving today,
Alas! it was a near disaster! Shocked

I made a crack to the mirror, it seems no problem so far.

Lesson> Do not haste, go slowly.

I wont finish mirror shaving until I shave 3mm across,
but my confidence was shattered with my mirror!!!! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Not easy to decide to make changes on a high value item like this, congrats!

I wish to see some new samples taken by you with those lenses what you can't use till this surgery.

Do not wary too much, CANON replaces the mirror around $250.

You're a far braver man than I am - have been considering the option of shaving the mirror but may hold off for another while!

Hope the finished result is worth the effort Wink

sorry to hear koji.
what kind of tools did you use?

If I remember well, Orio has used grinding paper, I decided to use a dremel, to avoid additional dust from the paper.
But the right rotation speed is the key, to slow - lots of vibrations, which can crack the mirror.

Had to do it five times, first one enabled the distagon 2.0 28, third one the distagon 18 and finally the fifth was successfull for my distagon 15 (~3.5mm). Thrilling...

Oh dear, hard luck! I know it can be replaced, but it's an expense you didn't expect.

Have you checked the autofocus since you cracked it Koji? Some of the light coming through the lens passes through the semi-silvered mirror for the AF sensors - I'm wondering if the crack upsets their operation.

No problemo.

I use "dremel" with diamond chip blah blah, but my mistake was
try to speed up the process I used sander type chip which broke
the mirror when I changed the angle of deremel axis almost perpendicular
to the mirror. That is NO NO! Very Happy

If I use only a diamond chip one and slowly, there would be any
problem I guess. I am an impatient soul, should leant better. Very Happy

I do not use AF on 5D, because no AF lens for EOS.

No that is not true, but I bought 5D for MF lenses which are
CZJ made or other manufacture such as Leica, Nikon, etc.

But I guess AF might be off now, I do not even use "chip"ed
mount adaptors. Those focus confirmation is not for me, it is
helpful I guess though. I did use this kind of adaptor, but my
focus becomes snail pace and bothersome after a while.

So I am very happy to use 5D as MF lens mother ship.
(I have a D700, D70, 350D too fortunately, and 350D's AF is also gone!)

Manual focus is my reason to shoot slowly, I do not do machine-gun
style shooting. My joy comes from manually focusing the lens,
the result is only 2% good, of course a good one gives me a smile.

Sorry to see it like that, this one is a scary example Sad
I'm planning to use sand paper but before the 5d I'll first try it on a contax and Pentacon-6 mirror. They are junk so good to practice on.

Saga continues.

So I almost finished the shaving.

Not really final stage (I may have to shave the side of mirror too)

Now Flektogon 25/4 can be used at inifinity

Shot by Flektogon 25/4 with mirror shaved 5D

And now I can use Flektogon 20/2.8, Flektogon 25/4, Pancolar 80/1.8, Modified
Canon FD 55/1.2 S.S.C., Modified Rokkro MC 85/1.7, CZJ 50/2.8 Tessar, etc.

EXCEPT

Modified Rokkor MC 58/1.2. UUGGHHH!!

to be continued.....

Man, that looks crazy!
Glad I haven't afford to go and buy a FF-camera... Smile

The final shape looks like...

Yes I dug a canal too. Very Happy

So I can use the most of Prakticars and MC Rokkor-PG 58/1.2 at inifinity too. This is shot with
Prakticar 50/1.4 first version whose bokeh is a bit wilder, not infinity shot tho.

I think every Prakticars can be used at infinity, but has not tested them all.

But 5D's finder is full of dust, I mean the inside finder between penta-prism and
transparent screen which you cannot take out easily. I found that Canon 5D is
not well made against DUST. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Shaving the mirror is not so difficult IMO, but the dust is hard to prevent from
getting inside of camera. (I will might buy a cheap 5D some day again.)

Now I can shoot all those Prakticars and some of CZJ made M42 lenses without
a problem, which makes me very happy even my 5D finder is very dusty. Laughing Laughing

But the weather becomes uncooperative these days,...

The end of my mirror shaving.

Sorry about dusts!

I hope you can find some days how you able to remove that!

PostPosted: Sat Dec 13, 2008 10:30 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

Don't wary, be happy. Attila Smile

I can ask service centre to clean the finder,
of course it will cost me. Crying or Very sad

It might be easier to buy a used 5D in a good shape!!!

PostPosted: Sat Dec 13, 2008 10:45 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

But new 5D has same trouble, you can't use your collection..

PostPosted: Sun Dec 14, 2008 2:02 am    Post subject: Reply with quote

I thought the 5D has an interchangeable focus screen, no? I took out the focus screen on my 400D and cleaned the space using a soft camel artist's paintbrush and a short length of 6mm PVC tube taped to the nozzle of our vacuum cleaner.

PostPosted: Sun Dec 14, 2008 2:34 am    Post subject: Reply with quote

It does not work that way, since underneath of penta-prism there is
one layer of AF-focus point indicators. The dust is there, not between
this layer and focusing screen which is removable and cleaned already.

I do not know how to remove this extra layer, and this layer is very
soft and easily scratched (I did long time ago). This layer is also
electrically connected to camera's system I think, better not touch it. Very Happy

Koji, i hade the same trouble after my mirror surgery.
Try this link, In my opinion it's very usefull.

http://www.ascent-design.com/photo/Clean5D/

My viewfinder looked really dusty, so I started the procedure from the link above. No pro skills needed, just patience Wink
Only swapped the focusing screen for a new EE-S (~40$). Because I was not able to clean it perfectly. Some little spots alwyas remained on the surface.

Now my viewfinder looks like new, just two pieces of dust - I don't care. Smile

Thank you for new information to clean extra layer! Very Happy

I will try it.

Thanks again.
