I just finished converting my FDn 50mm 1.4 to an EF mount using the new EdMika Canon FDn-EOS adapter kit. http://www.ebay.ca/itm/170911278282?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649#ht_2239wt_1344

He has developed a new line of kits specifically for the Canon FDn (New FD) "bayonet" mount lenses. They don't fit the older Canon FD or FL "breechlock" lenses.

The conversion process is quite easy to do for the average person but you really should watch the how-to video first. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9nXQBcyAjik&feature=player_embedded The video is 12:21 and that is about how long it took me to do the entire conversion.

This conversion allows full infinity focus without any optics so that image quality is preserved. On a Full-Frame camera there might be mirror interferance with certain lenses at infinity focus. At closer focus distances there is no interferance, and using Liveview eliminates the problem at longer focus distances. Even if you forget and do hit the mirror, it cause no damage to the lens or the mirror. With 1.6 and 1.3 crop cameras the mirror will never hit. (Apparently 1Ds FF cameras have a smaller mirror frame and also have no interference at infinity)

The kit consists of a really nice precision machined brass mount (fitted with a black sleeve to prevent light scattering) and a small machined peice of brass that is used to engage the aperture control after the old mount is removed. The mount comes equipped with a "Dandelion" fully programable Auto-Focus confirmation chip. Also included is a EF lens cap.

Here are some photos of the lens after conversion to the EF mount. There is a small indentation for a "lens Mount Index". (mounting alignment mark). I dabbed a bit of red paint on it so it is easier to spot.

Well it looks very pretty: could we see some results please?

Sure, all wide open at f/1.4

Thank you.

Looking at the price of the conversion kit, if you need to buy a "donor" lens to convert you might just as well go for the EF 50mm 1.4 lens?

Looking at his other kits for other FD/FL lenses you might bring back to life something which couldn't be matched at similar cost from a lens in the EF line-up.
I live with trifox conversions of the FL 55mm 1.2, the FD 85mm 1.8 SSC and the FD 135mm 2.5 SC. They will only function on my FF 5DII and the latter two don't run out to infinity. I wouldn't be without them but infinity focussing would make them that little bit more useful.

I already had the FD 50mm 1.4 so it made the conversion decision much easier. I also like to think that my FD lens is sharper than the EF version. Mostly because I must take care to get the manual focus right on instead of relying on the wonky Auto Focus that the EF 50mm 1.4 seems to be famous for.

Oh I choose when to MF (not 'togging my active grandson) and when to AF (that grandson again!). This'll cause my lens to self destruct... I don't have a wonky focus issue... here we go...

For me the MF conversion was a means to a good quality 1.2 lens..

Nice results from the 50/1.4. I wanted to get one for my T90 (I cannot bring myself to butcher the lens), thankfully, my LBA has been cured.

Thanks for the nice writeup here Mike.

No lens "butchering" required. The conversion is 100% non damaging and fully reversible. The full suite of conversions include a bunch of f/1.2 lenses, a Tilt Shift and all white super telephotos:
