seems to be working in preview

I recently got a Vivitar 400 5.6 in Nikon mount for a reasonable price and took some test pictures in the garden today.

The Vivitar listing here http://forum.mflenses.com/vivitar-lens-list-t542,start,15.html has 3 types of 400 5.6 listed.

vivitar 400 5.6 76 $454 $1,323 auto tele (MC)
vivitar 400 5.6 77 $130 $360 preset tele (T-2 mount)
vivitar 400 5.6 78 $280 $726 auto tele (TX mount)

Question 1

I am not sure which version I have? the mount does not seem to be changeable however maybe I have just not figured out how?
some pictures of the lens and the mounts below

Question 2
The lens has green and white aperture numbers as shown above. I can turn the aperture ring only so that the green ones are selected. What are the white ones for?

When the lens is NOT mounted to a camera the aperture closes when I turn to the green numbers. If the lens is mounted it stays always open no matter to which number I set the aperture ring. When I take a picture (With D4) the aperture is closed to the selected value.
That is good as the finder does not get darker and it helps focusing. However It allows only manual exposure.

Question 3
Can i get the stop down aperture to work?

Question 4
What is that black thing used for? There is a little switch and a left right arrow on it. But to my best fiddling ability I could not get it to do anything?

The shots below are all taken with 1/500 hand held I changed ISO to compensate for exposure.

5.6 looks a bit dreamy but 8 or latest 11 is quite usable for me.
I like the pictures and the contrast and will definitely use it in the future. There is even some glow at 5.6 Smile.
All pictures are unprocessed.

I wanted to see how it handles the glossy surface in sunlight at 5.6

Pretty well done

With the following three at 5.6, 8 and 11 I wanted to have an idea about the bokeh.
While 5.6 is completely creamy, I found 8 and even 11 still pleasing.

The slightly out of focus crops show the CA in the OOF areas which is quite strong at 5.6 and all but gone at 11.

Finally one more bird

and the crop

Very Happy

TX version

1. You have the TX version. It appears to be the internal focus version with Nikon F mount. It is not the later, Nikon AI mount.

2. White aperture scale is for cameras that couple to the meter in the opposite direction from Nikon.

3. The adapter may be installed improperly.

4. Press the little silver toggle and using the "black thing" for grip, rotate the ring that secures the adapter in the lens.

5. Here is everything I know about TX and their predecessor T4 lenses.

Good luck!
