Hi All,
I wonder if I can get some expert help for a colleague who's contemplating his first DSLR purchase.
He's a trained photographer who, like so many others, has become more of a family-snapshot point-and-shoot person over the years. Apparently most of his photography school work was with medium and large format, but he also owned a Nikon film SLR, and he still owns a number of older Nikkors. He's now interested in finding a DSLR that will mount those old Nikkors (I have no idea whether they're AI or non-AI), and he would probably make use of the kit lens as well. (I think he may also have a couple of old M42 lenses rattling around somewhere.)
He doesn't need to have the latest or the greatest - he doesn't need the highest MP count or a full-frame sensor - but he'd like to have a good, serviceable camera that isn't too far behind the curve. And he has no problem with the idea of purchasing a nice used camera from keh or some other reputable dealer.
He asked me for a make/model recommendation, and my off-the-cuff response was that he ought to investigate Canon, since that choice would enable him to use his old Nikkors and M42s, with the appropriate adapters. (That was difficult for me, since I'm not really a Canon person...although I will be, if Pentax doesn't introduce or announce a full-frame camera by the end of 2011...tick tick...) But my knowledge of specific Canon models, other than the full-frames, is basically nil.
Hence my question. Can I impose on your collective wisdom for some recommendations for a nice, mid-range Canon model - either current or recent - that might suit his needs? (Of course, if you think another brand might be a better choice, I would love to hear that, too.)
Thanks for your help!
Cheers,
