Did I pay too much for this adapter?

Click here to see on Ebay then click see original listing

My excuse explanation:

It's an m42 adapter for any Adapt-A-Matic lens. Let me tell you: those adapters do NOT grow on trees. I seldom even see them any longer. For adapters offered freestanding, sellers oftentimes can ask double what I just paid. The way to buy adapters is attached to an inexpensive lens. That's my take, anyway.

The lens itself? Worthless to me. I already have two of the 28mm Adapt-A-Matics. It's a lens I see offered for sale frequently, but not with this adapter. The purchase was for the sake of the adapter only.

Exception:

If the M/A switch on the lens happens to work, it might be worth having. Those switches work only infrequently.

But bottom line, I just bought a US$16+ adapter. Gosh that seems like a lot. Rolling Eyes

ETA

Oops. I just noticed this lens has the original Tamron filter. All Adapt-A-Matics were shipped from the factory with a Tamron filter, but very often the filters are cast aside or lost before the lens is sold years later. That original Tamron filter, if it's in decent shape, is a nice accessory to have and does complete the lens properly.

Truth is, though, since I originally paid no attention to the filter, my bid was strictly to win the adapter.

If they're that rare and you got the lens too, I think you got a bargain if the postage wasnt too high. It quotes me $48

Postage was US$6.35 for a total cost of approx. US$16+. I should have been clearer about that.

Gosh, $48 to ship to Europe. I hit the same thing over here in USA when looking to buy lenses in Europe. Most often, it's simply impossible because of the high cost of shipping.

I'm satisfied with this adapter purchase, I guess. I have several lenses waiting for that adapter.

I think any "hard to find" adapter bought for under $20 is a good buy, if it includes the postage as well even better.

OK, everybody, thanks. You all have helped me get my head straight.

That's something which is all too often a problem for me. Embarassed

Most cheap Chinese adapters for digital bodies run between 10-15 and up. Given the relative rarity of this adapter, I say you did rather well!

There's always loads of Tamron adapters for sale at the camera fair, some dealers just have a big box with them in so you have to sort through for the ones you need, and I see quite a few M42 ones. If people are having trouble finding them I shall buy a few at the next fair and pass them on at cost price, typically about £5.

Thanks. You know, it's funny to me. When I first found that auction I really did not focus at all on the lens, the filter, the caps, or the case. Because after seeing that shiny Pentax II adapter, I just sort of zonked in on it alone. Without that particular adapter I would not have dreamed of bidding that auction.

Certain adapters for m42 are tough and becoming tougher. Another example is T4 and TX adapters. Some of those prices are ridiculous. They are outlandish! T-mount m42 adapters are different because you can buy them new, inexpensively. Those are also rather uncomplicated compared with genuine T4, TX, and Adapt-A-Matic adapters. And YS/m42 adapters one very often easily can finagle in a professional manner, to where the outcome does not look shoddy or cobbled together.

FWIW, here is an example of what I was writing about above. You could with validity argue this is merely a silly asking price, meaning nothing without an actual sale at that price. I agree with that line of thinking. But I can report seeing more and more adapters priced like this one, and almost none at all priced reasonably or actually auctioned:

Thing is, for so many of us who enjoy the old lenses, the right adapter can make the difference between "life" and "death". Sellers appear to be catching on to that, jacking up their prices accordingly.

We don't have camera fairs where I live. For anyone with access to such events, this might be the right time proactively to fortify your adapter collection.
