Yeah I want one.

I sold my Samyang 75mm f1.8 because I didn't like the output and said "I want a Biotar instead". Now there's another way!

Yeah but without the title clue I'd have to agree with your guess.

Speaking of Jupiter 9 and Sonnar lenses, I hope some of those are coming next. I'd like me a nice Sonnar 50mm F1.5 variant, since I missed the chance of buying the original. Even better, so there will be no worries about separation and what not. They could also try with Biometar, that could also be interesting for MF users.

As for the Biotar copy, I have always prefered Helios 40-2 over the original, and that somewhat still stands. But the difference in WO sharpness actually matters in this case, I'm sure it makes the lens much easier to work with (focusing on the eye was a bit of a pain). This one is also much lighter and smaller, plus no more weird Leica-style aperture shape that always made me hesitant to shoot at F2-F2.8 when I wanted. A worthy consideration for sure. As for the actual Biotar original, I could buy one for 800 eur and I skipped it, since I don't care about resell value. Cca 300 for this one (after taxes) is a completely different song.

It looks like a big brother next to a Black Jupiter 9. I think the original CZJ still has more Magic. Softer due to less effective coatings.

Is it $1200 better?

Lens section of the original CZJ Biotar 1:1.5 f=7.5cm (right) vs the modern TTartisan 1.5/75mm (left).

Similoar lenses for sure, but by no means identical.

Keep in mind that the original Biotar 1.5/7.5cm has a distinctive yellowish-greenish color cast which is pretty nasty on color images (it can't really be corrected by adjusting the white balance!), but quite useful for b/w landscape images.

Aberrations of the original CZJ Biotar are pretty horrible at f1.5 (strong astigmatism coupled with cateye bokeh). Even at f5.6 the lens isn't that good (unlike newer superfast 85mm lenses), but at f11 it really shines - less lateral CAs than the 1.4/85mm lenses from the 1980s and 1990s!

I've bought the lens immediately. It's superbly built and feels nice on Sony A7.

IIRC the output aims to be "modernized Biotar". However, the spinning background is present.

Even when you not pick the "swirling" focusing distance it still swirls a bit:

Jonas Rask got a beautify set of pics included in his review:

I bought one and have been using it constantly - I love it....

my only issue was that when mounted, it was almost 180* off from the mount (aperture/focus scale) - so I loosened the three grub screws, turned it to where I wanted it, tightened it all up, and away we went...

Yea, the lens comes with an adjustable mount - you can rotate it to align against any wonky M42 adapter/body.

The included user guide describes the process, although you still need a Torx T5 screwdriver to do that.
