The Aviar in Compur with a really red leather stripe, just for looks Smile (BTW, this dial-set Compur shutter is the widest that can be mounted on this type of bellows):



I've uploaded an initial Cooke Aviar page at http://galactinus.net/vilva/retro/eos350d_aviar_f8.html, all photos at f/8, contrast adjusted. Of course, the micro contrast of this uncoated lens isn't up to Leica-R level, but otherwise I have precious little to complain about -- well, it's a pain to leave out photos...

I just wonder what a later, coated Aviar would be like compared to this 70 years old specimen.

Yes, I do know, thanks anyway. I probably even posted the second one when I bought the Aviar, and I considered posting the last one along with this announcement but thought that a down-sampled LF frame tells pretty little about the behaviour of a similar lens on a crop dSLR. BTW, the frame size of the Kodak 1A from which I extracted this lens is 64 mm x 109 mm, 1.5 times the area of the 56 mm x 82 mm of a 6x9 - it's a pity 116 format film isn't available anymore. I even considered converting the camera to use 120 format film in order to get a frame size of 56 mm x 109 mm, but ensuring film flatness would have been difficult and changing the position of the red window would have been another hassle.

Next I intend to see how the lens performs on a 5D - additionally also at f/11, which would already exhibit some softening due to diffraction on a 350D. This might be the lens for more traditional landscapes instead of my f/4.5 with the 105 mm Radionar, which was my favourite last summer.
