Does anyone have inside information why color films are now almost nonexistent and is the situation about to get better anytime?

I can't speak to supply issues over on your side of the pond, but here in the USA there's no shortage. It's as expensive as hell (over $20 for a single 24-exp roll of ISO 400 Kodacolor!), but it's easy enough to find. Even WalMart's online store has it.

This is the situation here (most used Europe / Germany internet stores).

From recent months on pentaxforums.com :

The B&H Photo representative says supply shortages are to blame.

Well, that was July. If you do an internet search now, you'll find plenty of it. Fuji's prices aren't too bad, but Kodak's are obscenely high. Probably because of shortages -- one can only hope.

My local camera store, Kenmore Camera, in Kenmore, WA has consistently had Fujicolor 200 for sale, three rolls of 35mm film of 36 exp. for $15.95. That seems to be a excellent bargain, and definitely keeps me coming back there.

How about their quality? Is there too much difference?

I actually found a load of colour film when I was clearing out some old camera gear the other day about 20 rolls worth, I rarely shoot film these days so stuck 10 rolls of expired 35mm fujichrome 400d on ebay. I saw some similar sold from Japan for quite a lot of money.

I have friends out hunting for unused disposable cameras at charity shops and boot sales. They often sell for £1-£3.

Most of what's turned up for me, so far, is film expired between 2008-2016 so I'm happy with that. Whatever brand, they always seem to contain relabelled fuji film

Many, though only contain 17 exposure films. But thats ok for testing.

YO !! Remember the British HARMAN Company have made the NEW PHOENIX 200 C41 process film Not CHEEEEP but AVAILABLE !

the name of mr.Harman (who invented B&W products years ago which became the Ilford co )resurfaced after the demise of Ilford when that label was split in three. Accordinmg to this thread : at APUG: https://www.photrio.com/forum/threads/harman-technology-vs-ilford-photo-vs-ilford-imaging-whats-in-a-name.203460/page-3#post-2752593 The dubious Phoenix respooling activity has nothing to do with Harmans factory.

High cost is one of the reasons why it has not become popular. The quality really depends on each person's perception.

Colour diapositives have a quality problem since Kodachrome has been discontinued and good films that do not contain dyes in the emulsion such as the Fuji dyes-iadded-n-the-dvelopment-bath remain dificult to obtain. And of course the zero cost and ease of snapping pictures on mibile phones as well as the fashion of immediate sharing instead of slow glue and pen- album- production has removed the big market for photo prints.
