Read the description closely, ask the seller questions (with a hot "Buy it Now" item, you might have to ask the questions after purchasing), and if what you get is severely different from what you should've got, you negotiate with the seller. I never suck it up; I always neg with the seller when I get a bad item, which is maybe 5-10% of the time (since I only go for the really good deals--- you can play it safe and only buy from reputable sellers, like Stil22, to have a near 100% satisfactory item, for a slight premium).
However, with a post-purchase negotiation, I would say that my final rate of satisfaction is close to 100%, meaning, I haven't had to give back a neutral or negative feedback to a seller in a loooong while.
