It is for rangefinder and not SLR/DSLR.

Hi,

I fear not ... If i remember well, the register distance for Contax RF lenses is about 29mm, thus less than the 44mm required by the EOS EF mount ...

Cheers

Maximum focusing distance would be around 20-30cm, so it would give about 1:4 magnification. Good for flower close-ups (sonnars have smooth bokeh), but not for general use. It's better to find a 50/2 Jupiter-8 for close-ups - optical character is the same, but the lens is very cheap.

Are there any coating on the Sonnar or the J-8?

Only T-marked Sonnars are coated. Jupiters are coated always (they were manufactured later), but quality of the coating changed in time. Early coating gives slight color cast (but early Jupiters are more constant in manufacturing quality), while later coating on black Jupiters was better for color photography, but optical quality could be more variable.
