Hi all - Pentax is far from releasing a FF DSLR so I just bought an used Canon 5D to slap my vintage lenses on. So far I'm liking it. Only got the body for about a week now and only used few C/Y lenses on it. I have a quite extensive Takumar collection and would like to use those on the 5D.

I've heard that some Takumar like the 50/1.4 will hit the mirror when focused at infinity with certain adapters. Having the right adapter would solve that mirror issue so can someone recommend one for me to buy?

There are so many options out there. I don't need the focus confirmation version, just the standard one.

Thanks in advance!

Duc

According to "Compatibility list of M42 and manual lenses on Canon EOS 5D DSLR" there's no way to get some takumars clear the mirror on 5D. Have a look on the list for your lenses.

I only use big_is adapters from ebay (M42, C/Y, Nikon, OM) and didn't have problems so far, even with "iffy" C/Y lenses.

In my experience, most 5D + adapted lens and subsequent mirror related problems tend to be down to the lens itself rather than the adapter.

Sticky-out bits like aperture levers, fins and sometimes the end of the lens generally cause most of the issues.

Check the link that hoacker provided.

Pebble Place is another but they mainly cover C/Y mount:

Congratulations on the new camera Duc!

Best M42 adapter for EOS I found was on Zenitar 16/2.8. It is exact thickness. All the other M42-EOS adapter are slightly thin. Mirror hits some lenses no matter which I use. Because the rear element is in exact same place when infinity focus.

For M42 lens without Auto/Man aperture switch use M42-EOS adapter with flange that presses aperture pin. For M42 lens with Auto/Man aperture switch can use M42-EOS adapter without flange, so switch can be used.

Thanks guys! Many thanks for your prompt reply. I will order a couple adapters from Big_is then.

Now, just so I can mentally prepare myself, what happens when the mirror hits the back of the lens? Does it break the mirror or something? Will there be any permanent dammage to the mirror or the camera itself?

Turns out I have a big_is m42 adapter attached to my 30D. Slapped it on the 5D against Voigtlander Ultron 50/1.8

The mirror of my 5D has hit something several times with no damage. It was a Planar 1.4/50 C/Y with my first adapter and an EXA lens. The mirror did get all the way up with the planar but hung on the way back. On the EXA lens the mirror seemed to hang on the way up as the picture was partially black. In both cases the space for the mirror was only a tiny bit to small with obviously small impact on the mirror. I have no idea what happens if the mirror is blocked by a metal fin or something like that...

Also keep in mind that some 5Ds lose there mirror "by design", Canon will fix this for free:

like hoacker wrote, it is good to check if your 5D mirror is ok
original glue used had problem and Canon fix it free of charge
I didn't read about damage to the mirror but it could scratch the lens
check if rear lens element go deeper than the adapter
some wide lens need precaution, browse the net

This.

Easy check without mounting the lens - fit the lens to the adapter and ensure that nothing protrudes beyond the rear face of the adapter.

Anything more than 1mm is likely to cause mirror problems on a 5D.
