I just looked at the Helios thread.
I think it is worth a new topic.
Here is my Helios 44 M42 mount with 8 blades.

Looks like my black Biotar 2/5,8cm

That sounds interesting.
I shot portraits with this lens one week ago and I was overwhelmed by the quality.

Here I found something about serial numbers beginning with 0

000xxxxxx factory test (study) models (prototypes etc) mod?les d'études
d'usine (prototypes etc..)
00xxxxxx preseries models reserved for members of the communist party
and "VIPs" (reservés aux membres du parti communist et haut
responsables en pré-série)
0xxxxxx reserved for factory syndicat leaders (réservés aux
responsables syndicaux d'usines)

There seem to be rather a lot of Russian lenses about with serial numbers starting '0'.

Confused

My 44 - silver M39 version - starts with 50 though. Sad Now what does that mean?

@ Xpres:
In Russian lenses, the first two digits of the serial number indicate the year of manufacture.

MF-addicted: That's true only for production copies. Pre-production prototypes and samples begins with zeros:

Quote:
000xxxxxx factory test (study) models (prototypes etc)
00xxxxxx preseries models reserved for members of the communist party
and "VIPs"
0xxxxxx reserved for factory syndicat leaders

There are of course some recent lenses (some new MIRs and Jupiters), which begins by 00 because they were manufactured in 2000. But that doesn't relate to Helios-44 lenses, which were discontinued somewhen in seventies.

Sorry, this was the answer for "Xpres". His serial began with 50.

Sorry Smile Anyway, that's strange even more. The oldest Helios 44 I've found on web was the M39 silver one from 1960. Even that is quite surprising, because I didn't find any Helios lens from 1961-1969.

And now 1950...?

Helios-44 was designed in 1950, but production begun around year 1958, according to this site:

http://www.zenit.istra.ru/archive/lenses/helios-44.html

Xpres: could you also post some pictures of your lens, please? Smile

I thought it a bit early! As far as I know the Zenit 1 first appeared in 1952 with an m39 mount and industar lens, so a 44 from 1950 seems a little odd. Maybe the year thing didn't start 'til later?

It came with my 3M which is dated at 1965.

It seems, that all M42 Helios-44 lenses are samples Shocked

I found this:

Quote:
The other thing that surprizes me is the serial number - I thought at KMZ it was always linked to the year of production. Apparently this is not the case for the Helios-44. My lense has number 4601xx, yet it must be from the end of the fifties or beginning of the sixtees.

Any ideas? My reserves ran dry Sad

Other early CCCP lenses (I checked my Jupiter-3, Jupiter-8 and Jupiter-9) have corresponding SN / manufacturing date... why is Helios-44 a exception?

Here's a thought. My 44 was made by 'MMZ' which didn't begin making lenses until 1957!
Perhaps different manufacturers had different ideas about serial numbers?

PostPosted: Mon Jun 08, 2009 8:44 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

The first two serial numbers denoting the year of manufacture does not apply to MMZ-make lenses. They used a different system.
