Ok , it's a manual focus lens forum . But I have a question about the crowd of AF film pocket cameras wich flooded the market before the digital . Wich one(s) produce the best IQ ? I had a samsung with Schneider Kreutznach lens before Canon SLR Was tot bad , but not too small .A comparison with the 35mm fixed lens RF would be fine !

olympus mjuII has a quite a good optics and can produce nice results. and it is very small.

The Yashica T3/T4 cameras are highly regarded for their lens (Zeiss Tessar) and should be available for less than your budget. I had both of them but I had to admit that I didn't like the Yashicas. The viewfinder is small and you have NO manual control. You don't even see at which speed you are shooting nor can you verify where the focus is. I tried several Olympus cameras as well but all was about the same. That might be the problem with most p/s-cameras. If you can live with that than the Yashicas are quiete good.

I ended up with a Nikon 35ti which is out of your budget. The camera gives full manual control as well as full auto mode. It uses Nikon Matrix metering and has a very useful flash automatic.

Ang go on very affordable price + wheather proof.

Yashica T4, T5 is there too for 3x more than Olympus.

I still use one of those Samsung Vega 140S ( 38-140 lens ), it's a great little camera. I've also got an Olympus XA2, which isn't bad but the older XA is reputed to be better. That's nice and compact. Very similar to the Samsung is another Olympus I got a few weeks ago - the Superzoom 140S ( 38-140 lens ). Which bears an uncanny resemblance to the Samsung, but I don't think they are clones, just competitors.

maybe not "affordable" but "funny" price according what it can deliver

but it has to be said it is one of the best options within the 100USD budget - if there´s (much) more to spend, you can buy those so-called top-class compacts like Contax T-line, Ricoh GR1 line, Nikon 28Ti/35Ti etc.

Trans: You can have the bestest gold-plated point and shoot in the world, but is worthless if
left in a drawer at home. Just sayin' Smile

I was knocked out by some slides I saw taken on an Olympus Trip 35. One of the few cameras that will still be working after the Apocalypse (though dev and scan to CD service may be hard to find then).

+1 for mjuII. i am perfectly happy with it. since i have it (2 months ago), i almost stop shooting with other cameras, which might sound crazy. here you have direct link to two examples (scanned quickly with V500, so do not represent the real power of this camera/lens):

one more thing: as i looked better to those mine scans, i must say this: on paper, pics from mjuII looks at least 100x better.

How much are the Yashica Tx going for nowadays?
I gave my T3 to my little son - maybe this wasn't a good idea. I think I didn't spend more than 25€ for either the T3 or the T4 I owned.

One other remark. Most of those p/s are made from plastic - so they look and feel a bit cheap. Nothing to compare with those old rangefinder cams like Olympus 35RC or a Rollei 35.

Btw. what will be the purpose of the cam?

I saw prices over the 100 $ limit for T4 on ebay . Yes , many of them seem cheap plasiky ,even the paised mju II and T4
As for the purpose of the cam , It has to be allways there in the pocket ,just in case. I'd load it with a 400 or 800 film for those moments when I don't want to carry a camera (but maybe I'd need one ).Of course , I could take my G9 with me , but I don't like the small sensor rendering from 400 onwards and the low dynamic range .
I'd coose a Contax T2 , but I don't afford and can't justify spending so much for such a camera .
Of course , there are the small fixed lens rangefinders to consider instead , but they are not quite pocket cameras .

I've given up on film P&S (as I have so many) and can even pass a Pentax Espio going for 10 pence, mind you GAS kicked in last week and I bought a Nikon RF2 for £1...... GAS kicked in? Yes cos I normally pay 50pence Wink Anyway most of the non zoom P&S gives similar results and would say the sharpness is below a good SLR lens, but my opinion might not be the best as I don't use P&Ss much, and if I wanted something small to go in my pocket would get a digital camera.

If money is issue best is Konica, good as than Yashica T4 or even better, I think better Laughing and go for peanuts. I have several times T4 all sold due didn't offer anything above Konica.

Is that why the only one I had came with a jammed shutter?

Oly mju ii is good, as is the Nikon L35AF. The Oly because it is small and was once weatherproof and the Nikon as it is as sharp but will also take filters.

Good golly, did I just say something nice about the enemy (a Nikon)? Laughing Laughing Laughing

I myself have been looking for a nice P&S 35mm film camera and I have decided to go for the oly Mju II. I`m still waiting for one to come up locally for a good price, but I my opinion it probably has the best price/quality ratio around.

PostPosted: Thu Nov 01, 2012 5:59 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

The Nikon L35AF is an excellent choice if you can find one in good shape. Make sure the battery door shuts tight and that the on/off switch makes good contact. It has an excellent five-element lens, the lens mount is threaded for filters, and the flash can be shut if you don't want it. With those options it should make a fine all-around P&S that you can also take a step higher with filters and fill flash.

Yes indeed...I have three and so far have tested my Nikon L35AF and AF210 (I would guess any AF2** would be good also) if you must have a film P&S and pick them up very cheap (under £5) you can't go wrong.
