RMC Tokina 200mm F3.5 is very good and dirt cheap prime.
It's also sold as Soligor and I guess some other brands for many mounts (Canon FD, Konica,...).
There are different versions, some with silver aperture ring and some with black aperture ring, but all are very good as far as I know.
I have one with a silver aperture ring wich is suprisingly good, low CA, no vignetting, very good sharpness even wide open, good contrast and colors....
You can get it between ~35-60€ (in auctions) and 70-90€ ("Buy it now"). Sometimes even cheaper (someone in the biggest bargain thread shot a relabeled one for less than 4 pounds on ebay.co.uk ) |
I paid £7 for a Soligor 200 f4.5 ( chrome ears - Tokina ) at a pawn shop, it's one of my sharpest lenses. _________________ LENSES & CAMERAS FOR SALE.....
I have loads of stuff that I have to get rid of, if you see me commenting about something I have got and you want one, ask me.

F4.5 and chrome? Are we talking about the same lens? Mine is F3.5 and has alu- or magnesium alloy mount and silver aperture ring.
Here are pics of mine (Soligor version, casing in bad cosmeitcal condition but makes perfect pictures)

Anyway that's cheap

Also, in my research, I came across the Contax 100-300.
I know its WAY beyond my budget, but maybe I will get one of the primes above and save for the contax zoom. |
The Contax VS 100-300 is amazing, but pretty big of course. The Contax VS 80-200/4 is also very good and much more compact and light (and affordable). Not as sharp and contrasty as the 100-300, but still very good. |

Yes, that's the one, mine's PK mount though. It's also in just about perfect condition other than having a stiff focus ring which is worse because of the cold weather. It's a very good lens. _________________ LENSES & CAMERAS FOR SALE.....

These have certainly encouraged me with this lens! _________________ Cheryle

I'd have to agree with you and everyone else who recommended this fine little piece of glass.

Minolta MD 200/4
small, light, optically superb, bought mine NOS in Box for € 100,--
can be found way cheaper too, if it can be a used sample.
Minolta MD 200/2.8
somewhat rare, in the € 300 - 500,-- range
similar quality to the f4 variant afaik, just bigger and a stop faster. |

Need to resurrect this thread.
Finally, I bought the Nikon 200mm F4 AIS and love it.
Now I am going to finally buy a zoom, and am thinking to cover at least 300mm.
So, for < $100, what would be the best 70-300mm or 100-300mm zoom lens?
Longer than 300mm is fine, and if I go down to 250mm already thinking to get the Tokina 50-250mm ATX.
But, I already have 200mm covered with the Nikon, so I would like some extra reach for fun.
Any ideas? _________________ Cameras: Sony Nex-5n, Olympus E-pl1, Canon S95

I have a Tefnon 75-300 f5.6 Macro/Zoom that I got dirt cheap ($1, came in its' original packaging!).
I wasn't sure what lens I wanted for bird photography so it works well as a starting point. It's got some chromatic aberration but it's reasonably sharp -- especially for the price.
