I picked up this big and heavy 28 mm in Canon FL mount (it has an auto/manual switch, typical of old FL lenses) from a thrift shop for 10 USD, in very nice condition. It focuses down to 9" (22 cm) and has a 62 mm filter thread, so it does not strike me as a budget lens (i.e. small and slow). Googling turns up virtually nothing, however. Ebay has a few listings of similar lenses, but they have a 58 mm filter thread and lack the "F.I.M" on the name ring.
Does anyone have any info on this lens? What does F.I.M stand for?
A 28/3.5 for size reference:

You have something very unusual there! Is the mount removable like the Tamron Adaptamatic? _________________ In Search Of "R" Serial Soligors

Looks like a variant of the type sold as a Vernon Edonar, based on the large front element and 62mm filter. I could be wrong, best wsy to tell would be side by side comparison plus some disassembly.
Its not like the Adaptamatic except in general cosmetics.
I agree, a rare piece. There are a lot of undocumented Tamrons out there, some varianrs of known types, some unique. _________________ I like Pentax DSLR's, Exaktas, M42 bodies of all kinds, strange and cheap Japanese lenses, and am dabbling in medium format/Speed Graphic work. |

I have no clue what this is,
it is very unusual build for 28mm
Pipe format would suggest 85 or 135 mm
Look at the camera side see FD-FX
This part maybe is not from the lens but an additional adapter to...FX? whoever knows what that is supposed to mean |

I´m sorry for the confusion I´ve caused The bottom part, FD-FX and downwards, is my Canon FD to Fuji X adapter and Fuji rear lens cap. The lens itself "ends" with the black, knurled ring with a white dot on it (just above the word "Lock" on my adapter).
The mount is removable; the silver ring found just above the black ring is threaded and can be screwed out, with the black ring attached. The black and silver ring can spin independently of each other.
If the silver ring is too tightely screwed in, the lens won´t mount because the FD mount/black ring gets too tight as well (hard to explain in text, especially since English is not my native tongue...)
Perhaps it´s a pre-stage to the adaptall mount (which is a bayonet mount and not threaded)? _________________ Sony A7R and wildly varying flora of lenses |

It sounds rather like the Adaptamatic mount system.
The Adaptamatic used a screw in lock ring just like that.
It may be an early version of Adaptamatic.
Is the filter thread 62mm ? Could it be 58mm?
If 58mm this lens matches precisely the details and layout of the earliest version of the 28mm Adaptamatic. _________________ I like Pentax DSLR's, Exaktas, M42 bodies of all kinds, strange and cheap Japanese lenses, and am dabbling in medium format/Speed Graphic work. |

Thanks for the info on adaptamatic, that certainly seems to be the case with my lens. The thread is definitely 62 mm;
it came with a very short screw-in hood, marked with "62 m/m" on the front rim (not included in my pictuers). I took it off because it looked beat up, with some black residue on the side.
Looking at http://www.adaptall-2.org/lenses/PFH-28Au.html, mine is definitely not one of the versions mentioned there (as they all have a 58 mm filter thread).
It seems I have stumbled over something quite rare; I´m excited to find out exactly what. _________________ Sony A7R and wildly varying flora of lenses |

Mystery solved; it seems I have the first version of the 28/2.8 which, according to http://allphotolenses.com/lenses/item/c_1186.html has a 62 mm filter thread. _________________ Sony A7R and wildly varying flora of lenses |
