Can anyone recommend any such lenses?

In the focal length range of 20-28 mm, and best with f/2.8 or more open...

Good wide angle manual lenses are about the only thing which my collection doesn't have.

the smc takumar m42 24/f3.5 lens is excellent in all respects....

The Super Tak 28mm 3.5 is alo a nice alternative.

The vivitar series 1 28mm F1.9 is also an excellent lens but its kinda hard to find and may be too expensive for your budget.

Because its got seven elements and is a wide angle, I think its worth the little extra
money to get the super multi coated version of the 28mm/3.5 instead of the supertak.

DELETED, missed the M42 requirement for the lens

Meyer Primagon 4.5/35, one of my favourite lenses.

PostPosted: Tue Nov 06, 2012 10:23 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

Primagon falls a bit short of f2.8 and a bit long of 28mm.

The Ultra Lithagon is a good 28mm, but prices have become kind of ridiculous lately. The Super Lithagon 2.8/35mm is maybe the best of the Lithagons, but also pricey these days (but not stupidly expensive).

One of the best 28mm lenses I have is the Sigma Widemax 2.8/28mm - this is an entirely different lens than the more common miniwides, and IMO a better lens in every respect except for being a bit big. Kind of hard to find, but I only paid $20 for mine. These are YS mount so if you find one not in M42, grab it anyway and look for the proper m42/YS adapter.

Mamiya's 2.8/28 is also supposed to be good but I haven't tried it because their 35mm is not anything special.

Mine - Auto Mamiya Sekor SX 2.8/28 - has quickly become my favourite 28, and one of the lenses I use most.
The bad part is that it's a bit tricky to adapt, and not extremely common.

Do you need really a wide angle lens to use wide open ?

PostPosted: Tue Nov 06, 2012 11:53 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

I'll second the S-M-C Takumar 3.5/24 - MFD 25cm - ∅58 - 6 blades
I also own and really like the Vivitar 2.5/28 - SN 22xxxxx (Kiron made) - MFD 30cm - ∅62 - 6 blades

And i've got a 1979 HOYA 2.8/28 HMC (with caps/hood/case) MFD 30cm - ∅52 - 6 blades
all mint.... if you want it....

Have a look at SICOR lenses. Mine's an OM mount but they're available in m42. They;re very cheap if ye hunt around.

I used to have a bunch of the mamiya sx lenses but I sold them because they didnt have manual mode diaphram.
One of those, the 21mm/4 was exceptional, very sharp even wide open.

I'll second Mir's suggestion of the Kiron-made Vivitar 28mm 1:2.5. I have it and it's fambulous. Mine gives everything a slightly blue cast when compared to other 28mm lenses, but the sharpness (even wide open) is incredible. Oh, and it's a very pretty lens. And that matters a lot.

I'll get some ridicule, but I like my el cheapo Focal 28mm 1:2.8. It was about $5 and it pin-sharp on my K-7. On full frame or film it's a bit soft on the corners, but for APS-C it's a stunning standard lens.

RMC Tokina 2.8/28mm, Vivitar (Komine) 2.8/28mm (close focus or non-close focus), Auto Beroflex MC (CIMKO) 2.8/28mm, tiny Soligor 2.8/28mm starting with #99...

Thank you all for the advice!

I will clarify - 35mm is not wide enough, and 17mm would be too wide (although I am using an APS-C sensor camera) ...

So 20mm, 24mm and 28mm are the standard focal lengths, although any other available for a decent price will do.

My price range is 100$ or less, but if something REALLY SPECIAL arises, I might cash up a bit more Smile

Thank you all for the suggestions.

The vivitar 28mm f/2.8 seems a nice choice.
When looking for it, I found a vivitar 28mm f/2.5 to be sold for 96.99$ .
Might go for that... but I also found a few similar looking lenses sold on the same page; they are all copies of a lens named COMPUTAR...
Anyone heard of such a lens?

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_sacat=0&_nkw=vivitar+28mm+m42&_frs=1

The Tokina is also an attractive option.

While doing my initial search, I also ran into the following; would be glad to hear about these lenses:

ACCURA DIAMATIC 28mm f/2.8

http://www.ebay.com/itm/ACCURA-DIAMATIC-Wide-Angle-1-2-8-f-28mm-M42-Screw-Mount-Type-Lens-/280957838220?pt=Camera_Lenses&hash=item416a64638c

CHINAR MC 28mm f2.8 (it says it's for "canon mount"; if it's EF mount, it's good for me, as I'm a canon user, but I don't know if it is EF or not)

http://www.ebay.com/itm/CHINAR-MC-28mm-f2-8-Wide-Angle-Lens-for-CANON-35mm-Film-Camera-/110797456786?pt=Camera_Lenses&hash=item19cc0b0592

CHINON 28MM F2.8

http://www.ebay.com/itm/M-42-SCREW-FIT-CHINON-28MM-F2-8-PRIME-WIDEANGLE-LENS-IDEAL-FOR-DIGITAL-/370684776407?pt=UK_Lenses_Filters_Lenses&hash=item564e88cfd7

Also, can anybody suggest 20mm or 24mm lenses which fit the criteria mentioned?

PostPosted: Wed Nov 07, 2012 10:55 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

Good 20,24mm will not fit into 100 USD budget for sure, perhaps Kiron 24mm with little faulty.

PostPosted: Wed Nov 07, 2012 11:03 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

for 20mm I would suggest MC Mir 20/3.5, it's good, and it's relatively cheap - I pay 90 euros for mine, but usually it goes a bit higher.
For 24mm I don't know, I'm still looking for the right one.

Anyway your budget is ok for a good 28, but a bit tight for something wider.

I have a Vivitar (Serial No. 22XXXXXX) 24mm f/2 Auto Wide Angle M42. Like this one Click here to see on Ebay. Cosmetics excellent. Glass the same - although I need to check thoroughly in good light. BUT the aperture is sticky - oil is visible on the blades. The blades respond under manual control but are very sluggish. The auto pin is sticky. Caps & Vivitar 1A filter. Please PM me if interested.

Ensinor/Club 24mm F2.8 macro. Not quite as cheap as they used to be as the word has got out, but still much cheaper han the Takumar.

I recently bought a Vivitar 28mm, which is in great condition, but sadly I am unable to get it to focus to infinity, see link below and todate I have had no reply to that post, so still unable to use as a landscape lens.
