My Vivitar (Komine) 200mm 3.5 has MFD of 1.80;
CZJ Sonnar 180mm 2.8 has MFD 1.70m.
But Tamron SP-52A 70-210mm 3.5-4.0 goes byond 1.00m en does 1:2 without extra accessoires. Very nice for € 10.00 on a shrift market:D
But somewhat large and heavy.
I have a Tamron 103A 80-210mm 3.8-4 (smaller and lighter) with MFD 0.90m (1 : 2.8 )
So I think you have to look for some zoom with a good reputation.
The both Tamrons din't cost me too much (the SP was a steal) and the 103A is not much larger then an older 200mm prime.

That Tamron is excellent, although I prefer my Tamron BBAR Macro 85-210 / 4.5. Constant aperture, and good very close macro, and sharp!

Off topic here, but most people don't realise how close-focus the Tamron SP 500mm AD2 mirror lens is. At 1.7m it is as close as a lot of 135mm lenses, and 3.7 times the magnification. This is a 1:3 magnification ratio. The 2x tele extender gives 1:1.5, sadly it is virtually unusable - you are probably better off cropping.

no doubt about that but you cannot get one for 20 pounds and count mount it on eos

Yes, absolutely but I find it usable.

That's the same as mine, it's one of those lenses that seems to get extremes of love and hate, I love it, many people don't. I posted some pictures a few weeks ago on this thread taken with this Tamron -

http://forum.mflenses.com/viewtopic.php?t=31987

I was genuinely impressed with it, the shots I took and posted were all quick hand held shots as I was messing around in the garden, with some care and a tripod / monopod they would have been excellent. I really think it's a lens that shines above so many others in this zoom range, and I've got 12 lenses that are roughly comparable - third party zooms from 20 / 30 to 180 / 250 mm. And there's a couple of Vivitar Series 1's and a Soligor CD in that lot. I would take this Tamron any day.

How about good quality close up lenses. a 1.0 or even a 0.5 would get you a lot closer

I have got macro lens and raynox 250 and tubes I'm well equipped for macro Smile I wanted relatively fast 200mm for flowers etc. My last lens like that was minolta 70-210 F4 and I loved it but since I switched to canon I was missing 200mm. Sure did have canon 100-400L but that was heavy and huge. I will give a try this tamron TAMRON 85-210mm f/4.5 and to be honest that older one with 3.8 to 4 aperture might be better but I love the looks of 4.5 a lot Smile

Nikon 80-200 f4 has 1.2m as MFD. Pretty cheap too.

Surprisnig test...Feel like St Thomas, but it's possible...
You'll tell us.
Take care at the mfd with the macro system engaged, sometimes it's too short and that kills the benefit of a long focal.

It inspired me to try a Cosina 3.5D close up lens (from the Cosina 100/3.5 AF Macro) with my Tele Takumar 200/5.6 which I just have bought. The Tak. has the 2.5m MFD and the close up reduced it to approx. 20cm, which is imho way too much. The 0.5D-1.0D you suggested sounds like much better choice.

Another notable close-focus telephoto that hasn't been mentioned in this discussion is the Tamron SP "Tele Macro" 300mm f/5.6, the model 54B. Has a fixed rear element like the Vivitar 200/3, close focus just under 1.4 meters. Very nice lens to use.

1.4m for 300mm is really close
