Here a little comparison between the Olympus E-Zuiko OM 100mm f/2.8 vs the Nikkor-P 105mm f/2.5 (ai(s) formula) and the Rolleinar MC 105mm f/2.8. Of course, this test is limited and not testing all qualities of each lens. Sony A7RII, tripod, 2 sec self timer.

First, a picture of the lenses:

I love the pre-ai Nikkor lenses. Build quality is just fantastic. This is the later Nikkor-P version, which has the same optical formula as the later AI and AI-s versions. The Zuiko is lovely too. The size is incredible, and the mechanical quality is excellent. The Rolleinar is similar to the Mamiya SX. Only it has multicoating. It's pretty tiny too and has a built in hood.

The pictures:

The differences are small. The Nikkor has slightly nicer bokeh balls (more aperture blades).

Then, the first 100% crop:

To my surprise, the Zuiko seems to have the sharpest image at all apertures. At f/2.8 the Nikkor-P is a bit sharper than the Rolleinar, but at smaller apertures the Rolleinar becomes sharper.

Let's look at the other 100% crop:

The same conclusions for this crop as well. The Zuiko is sharp!

Limited test of course, but the Zuiko shows remarkable center resolution. I expected it to end third, being such a tiny lens, and considering the reputation of the Nikkor. The Zuiko is probably a bit under the radar because of its expensive brother, the 100mm f/2.

As you said, that Zuiko is surprisingly small!

Thanks for the detailed comparison. Great information.

I have so far collected many many of these 100/105mm lenses but only tested them briefly when I got them. Some have better sharpness, some have better bokeh, some have better contrast, etc.

One of the lenses I like is a 100mm/2.8 made by Sun under various of brands. It somehow overall has the better of everything I like.

Interesting. I will keep my eyes open.

The nikkor pictured is not an AI, or even a "K" with the metal focusing tube.
It received a factory made AI conversion aperture ring somewhere along the line.
IIRC, the "P" and "PC" series were late 60's to quite early 70's production.
Your example is a quite able performer-especially for it's time period.

Olympus is a bit shorter and Rolleinar a bit longer than 100mm I guess

Sure, but it's a late one with the same lens layout as the later Ai.

In my experience Oly 100/2.8 was sharper than Canon FDn 100/2.8 everywhere.
Minolta MD-III 100/2.5 wide open has the tiniest advantage over Oly in the center on 36Mp sensor, but pulls significantly ahead in the corners.
