G'day all
I would welcome our opinions on 2 newly acquired 300mm lenses. Which one has more potential and quality, or are both about the same? And what about the age?
1. VIVITAR 5.5/300 auto-vivitar
2. TOKINA 5.5/300

I expect they will be very similar, they will probably have quite a lot of CA. The Japanese 5.5/300 I have of that vintage is not good. _________________ I don't care who designed it, who made it or what country it comes from - I just enjoy using it! |

Tokina did make a 300mm for Vivitar. They look like different lenses here though.
I expect a large amount of CA from both. _________________ Casual attendance these days |

My vivitar 300 was a 'what you pay what you get lens' I not expect good quality from any of them. _________________ -------------------------------

What's the serial number of the Vivitar? That will tell us if it's the same lens The Tokina might be OK. I have the older preset version and it's excellent with next to no CA. I tried a later Vivitar T4 model, made by Tamron, which was horrible. _________________ Graham - Moderator

The 5.5 is a Vivitar T4 lens made by Tokina. They are actually pretty good but the CA is an accepted fact of shooting with one. The TX version of the Vivitar though a f/5.6 lens is a bit sharper than the T4. _________________ Big Dawg |

The Tokina there is definitely the same as the one made in a T4 version under the Vivitar and Soligor brands; I have one in fixed M42 in the Sears brand. These (both the T4 and the fixed mounts, and in dozens of brands) were the first series of Tokina-made auto lenses.
A very nice lens in my opinion, quite sharp wide open and comparable to the also very good 300/5.5 Tokina preset, but its quite heavy for what it is. CA seems quite reasonable for a tele lens of this vintage. People have different tastes and of course there is sample variation.
The Vivitar seems like a slightly later model. Does it have a T4 or Tx mount ? _________________ I like Pentax DSLR's, Exaktas, M42 bodies of all kinds, strange and cheap Japanese lenses, and am dabbling in medium format/Speed Graphic work. |

Because it has the metal focus grip with chrome trim I'd say it is a T4. _________________ Big Dawg |
