Hey everyone, I bought my first DSLR last month and have immediately started building a weird and wonderful manual lens collection thanks to this site (and another specifically for Alpha cameras)!!

I love my Super Takumar 55/2 and Pentacon 135/2.8 for bokeh...both stunning. My Tessar 50's not bad either! But this one surprised me...a Tamron Adaptall2 70-210 f4-5.6 (really compact model). Caught this in the forest on boxing day...

Hmm...the pic shows up in message preview, but not once posted...weird!!

Interesting sample, where did you make it ?

I was in Rome last week, and it was taken at the top of the Spanish Step.
There was a walkway with lights on.

That one was taken with Rokkor 58/1.2.

This was taken with Leica 90/2.0 at the same spot.

Kuuan: About bokeh. I believe it is the rendering of the background just as your sample shows. Many people mostly look for how the out of focus highlights render. Bright ring, neutral or gaussian. This may be a a good indication on how the lens renders OOF areas, but it is not the same as bokeh, in it's original meaning.

thank you for your deliberation Jan.

Did you do any postprocessing on the images? And is the white balance the same on both? interesting differences in the colour rendering!

I don't do much post processing. In fact, I wish i know how to do nice PP..
I just change little contrast, and sharpen a little.

it's interesting that you find the two lens different.
I thought they were pretty similar...

Hi all of my friend,

I've just came back and saw all of your great pictures. Thank you very much.

And I've tested my Helios 40-2 85mm f1.5 black version. The bokeh stunt me for a while. Laughing

The sharpness is ok and suitable for portrait.

The odd thing about this 1935 lens- the front element is coated. I thought it was an aftermarket job until I saw a couple more on the Web in the same SN number range that also had front elements that were coated. It is sharp!

Jena had famous T coating I don't know when they did start to use I have some cm scale lenses with red T mark.

I also converted a 1939 5cm F1.5 "T" coated lens. Wide-Open on the Canon P.

I've read that Zeiss started coating lenses on a limited basis in 1935. By 1939, the "T" coated lenses were being produced. I also picked up a 1940 5cm f2 "T" coated Sonnar, and converted it to the Leica.

1940 CZJ 5cm f2 "T" coated lens, on the Canon P.

Just follow the quoted link, that'll tell you all I know about this lens...

quick comparision:

Jupiter 37AM MC 135/3.5
Pentacon preset 135/2.8 (bokeh-monster)
TAIR 11A 135/2.8

at f/5

The same white balance for all (this WB seems to be best for the Pentacon), but lighting conditions changed a bit.

Jupiter

Pentacon

Tair

Seems to their real focal length is not identical, but their bokeh (at least in these conditions) is very similar...

But in my opinion the Tair is the best of the bunch!
Thanks for these shots.

Some of my examples :

S-M-C Takumar 35/2 @f/2 :

Tamron 500SP (dirty sensor, I know Rolling Eyes ):

Helios 44M-4 @f/2 :

Enna Munchen 240/4.5 @f/4.5 on extension tubes :

And to finish, my Domiplan 50/2.8 that I modified :

Yes, it's a triangular bokeh, I remove 3 blades of the diaphgram Mr. Green

Hi CarbonR,

Domiplan 50mm f2.8 is great. What is the bayonet mount and why did you modified it?
