This was today's camera show find, a pocket 200mm tele! Some quick shooting shows the lens to have the usual Takumar quality: sharp and good color right from wide open... such as it is. Mfortytwo says this lens is from 1958 or a bit later, the later ones had the Tele-Takumar name.

Compared to a couple of monster teles: Vivitar T4 200/3.5 and Tamron 103a 80-210 adaptall

And a 100% crop:

I shot them all wide open.

Cute cat ! I don't like lens sharpness, pretty weak compare this an 200mm f5.6 , I not like much old Takumars that is also true. Sorry for my straight opinion.

No problem Attila, I like it for the age and size, not necessarily for sharpness. Though it manages.

This is very nice from you, not many people respect lenses due for ages only. I am rescued also so many old lenses just for this reason.

I imagine the Tak is actually very sharp, just misfocus in these photos. I love this lens because its size. like all pentax lenses old and new they are smaller, lighter weight and easier to handle than lenses from other manufacturers. something the Asahi Optical Co. has always been known for engineering. how they managed to get so many lenses especially some tele's to have 49mm threads is beyond me. thats a pre-set aperture lens isn't it? very cool.

I have this lens... And its pretty sharp. Very small in size. I always keep in my bag.

This is my set of Tele Takumar 200mm f5.6 on Flickr,

I have both, all black and with silver ring, 135mm f3.5 preset as well as 200mm f5.6 from Takumar range. I am missing 300mm f5.6, will get one day...

Smile I hope to take better (focused) photos with this lens, I was excited to have found it at the camera show yesterday... Talk about a portable tele!

Here's a couple better photos, this lens is pretty good wide open:

I have a friend who has this lens, I thought it fairly rare?
I have tried it and it is Very sharp.
I think your pictures are still soft or maybe just the PP.

I have seen very nice samples by Veijo made with this lens.

Handheld? or on a tripod? Usually the latter is preferable at this focal length

Handheld, and yes, with my hands, a pod would do wonders.

Some shots from today.

CFD 2.5 meters is a bit long but still close enough for good boken

sharpness is ok although wide open it needs to be sharpened a bit. This was shot at ISO 4000 so it may seem a bit processed.

I don't have this Takumar. I have several of the super takumar 200mm f4 and the SMC versions. When I first dove into vintage manual lenses I bought many FL's of the Asahi Optical company. They were inexpensive, functtionally excellent (almost always, and i bought quite a few at very low bid labelled "as is"), optically very very good. I still think the super tak and SMC are the most reliable lenses of the "Golden Era" of manual lenses. To me the Golden era was when they st.ill made lenses of metal and glass but good optical calculations and coatings had arrived on the scene.

This one was made to be travelled with I guess. The 200/3.5 alternative is a bit large as 200mm's go, so people wouldn't likely pack it in a suitcase.

I quite like this lens. Incredibly small, built like a tank and decent optics.

This lens was only ever made in preset. First as Takumar, later as Tele-Takumar. The Pentax-m 200mm F4 is a bit shorter than this one and a stop brighter, but also wider and a bit heavier. The Takumar feels more massive in your hand though because of it's narrower build.
