Sharp 28mm for FF

Hello,

I'm looking for one or two 28mm lenses to use on my Sony A7 Smile

I need very good sharpness across the frame with acceptable sharpness wide open
and good close up capabilities with at least f/2,8 aperture, acceptable bokeh and sharpness wide open

I can buy one sharp lens for landscape and one "bokeh" lens for close up and everyday use.
Every mount is fine.
I can pay the price if it is worth it, but please don't advise me a Leica lens, except if I can find it under $400.
Please avoid the wonderful Pentax K 28mm f/3,5, it is probably outstanding but I looked for three months and was not able to find one.

Thanks a lot for your advices Smile

Minolta MD 2/28 or Sony FE 28mm f/2

There are so many excellent 28s out there that it might be easier telling you which ones to avoid. And in that respect, I got one: the Albinar 28mm "Macro". Probably found with other off-brand labels also. I think the lens I had was made in Korea. Definitely one to avoid.

My experience with good 28s is limited, mostly because I discovered rather early on the magic of 24mm. I found I much preferred 24mm over 28mm, which effectively limited my experience with 28s. Nonetheless, I can recommend any of the Canon, Nikon, or Pentax 28s, as well as the Tamron 28/2.5.

You might pick up RMC Tokina 2.8/28mm it is a workhorse. You will have to pay much more to get slightly better results.

I have the Minolta MD 28mm f2.8 (the one with 55mm filter thread, that is believed to be the best of the 2.8 series), an I found it to be interesting on APS-C . But on the FF it started to ghost/flare like hell (I had to remove the massive screw-in hood), so I went for Sony's native 28 F2.0, which IMHO surpasses vintage Minolta in any aspect except distortion (but it's not really the problem for me).

I'm not sure if this link is visible if you're not on Facebook, but I did a little 28/2.8 comparison test last year with a few interesting 28's. https://www.facebook.com/SimonForsterPhotographic/posts/1379798262117097

For contrast, sharpness, colors and depth effect I am delighted with my 28mm f/2.8 Contax/Yashica Distagon. I've tried other nice lenses which will deliver good results, but prefer this one. The only negative for me is that it is a bit on the heavy side.

Cheapo Olympus Zuiko 28/3.5 are rather nice even on FF.

Six month ago I was also looking for a decent 28 for my A7II I endet up with the Sony FE 2/28, it`s a decent performer, contrasty, sharp already wide open and with a very smooth bokeh. The only downside is it`s distortion which is sufficently adressed by the cameras internal correction - modern lens design.

Best regards

Timo

Most 28/2-2.8-3.5 manual lenses are sharp across the frame on the Sony A7 series cameras, stopped down to f8-11.

According to my own experience, the ones that are able to achieve that 1/2 to 1f stop earlier, corners included, are:

Nikkor AIS 28/2.8
Zeiss Distagon 28/2.8 C/Y MM
Pentax K 28/3.5
Nikkor AI/S 28/2
Zeiss Distagon 28/2 ZE/ZF
Minolta Rokkor MC/MD/Plain 28/2
Oly Zuiko 28/2
Canon nFD 28/2 by a hair

I only left that lens, too. From the last.

I would recommend to buy a cheap Pentax M 28mm f3.5 with the adapter and wait for a K or buy the Distagon f2.8 C/Y.

I've owned two copies, both were soft wide open.

I second this. Tokina RMC 28mm 2.8 is a good lens on my 5D3.

I did not say it is sharp wide open.None 28/2 is.It only gets sharper across the FF frame between f5.6 and f8,so quicker than many others, like for example Oly 28/3.5,Oly 28/2.8,Pentax M 28/2.8 and 28/3.5 that need rather something like f8-f11.

Thank you for your advices.

Just bought a cheap Tokina 24mm f/2,8... If it's good, I may look for the 28mm version.
Otherwise, I'm thinking about Pentax M 28mm f/3.5, Vivitar close focus or maybe 28mm Tamron adaptall (not very well known but easy to find like new for a good price, and their 90mm is excellent). I saw one Pentax K 28mm on ebay in more or less six months... sold for more 250 € if I remember well.

Anyone tried a 28mm Nikkor ? Really like my 50 f/1,4 AI-S.

Vivitar close focus 28/2 is pretty good on APS-C but not on FF....

I figured the requirement for sharpness to be a given, considering the topic.

In my hands they would get acceptably sharp between f/2 and f/2.8. The improvement was so pronounced that I even considered opening them up and adding an extra click in that spot.

That lens does not have a stellar reputation for whatever reason. I am not 100% sure it's deserved, but I've never used it enough to form my own opinion despite owning a copy. On a plus side that makes them cheap.

This has an excellent reputation for macro:

Kiron Kino 28mm f2 MC

I have lost my research notes.

Perhaps, but they almost invariably have oily aperture and are 10% thread locker by weight.
