I've been shooting with the 60D which I like but it's a crop sensor (1.6X). One of the things I like about it is the relatively small size compared to the 7D which has the same sensor.
If it's a large as the 7D, I will most likely not upgrade as I do a lot of hand-held work.
I have never shot full frame DSLR, but was a full frame film shooter for decades.
My concerns are:
Size of the body (as per above).
Will I be able to use my current lenses? I'm especially concerned about the Canon EF (AF) lenses I own plus my manual focus macro lenses:
Zeiss 60/2.8 Makro-Planar
Micro Nikkor 105/2.8
I would be doing this for a gain in IQ. I rarely shoot wide lenses.
Thoughts? |

The EF lenses probably won't work, or if they did, vignette pretty badly.
The manual lenses should be fine; only thing to worry about would be wide angles (mirror-hitting issue--won't know till people start trying lenses).
I think 6D is great and I'm contemplating whether to upgrade to it from my 5Dmk2. _________________ Sony α7R, Pentax 67II, Kiev-60, Hasselblad 203FE, 903SWC, Graflex Norita 66, Mamiya M645 1000s, Burke & James 8x10, Graflex Pacemaker Speed Graphic (4x5 and 3x4), Century Graphic (2x3), R.B. The 6D is about as big as the 7D but it's very pleasant to use. I was playing with it at the Photokina.
The excellent thing is, based on my first impression, that the mirror box and the mirror seems to leave more space for lens rear parts than in the 5D series!!
If that turns out to be the case, that is great news for manual lens users! _________________ Personal forum activity on pause every now and again (due to job obligations)!

Thanks Rawhead and Carsten.
Apparently my 85/1.8 & 50/1.4 are EF lenses. Good news.
I may just wait until the drop near $1500.
Will I be able to see an IQ difference beyond getting full frame coverage from all my lenses?
My 60D has 96% viewfinder coverage. The 6D has 97%! Woohoo!

The key improvements for me over the 5D II are:
* Cleaner high ISO, and from the limited samples around, it looks better than the 5D III too
* Better LCD
* GPS
* Wi Fi and remote control via Apple / Android devices
* Smaller, lighter body
* Ability to set a minimum shutter speed when using auto ISO (useful with old lenses)
* Weather resistant (more so than the 5D II)
* More sensitive centre AF point
Disadvantages:
* Slower max shutter speed of 1/4000th second compared to 1/8000th second
* Need new software to process the files (I've just bought Lightroom and PS Elements, neither of which support it...yet) _________________ Graham - Moderator

I heard that the GPS costs and additional $800 USD.

This I REALLY hate when updating to a new camera. So I imagine CS5 will not support it? I do hate Canon/Apple for this. |

Sorry, guys, for the late answer. Just didn't see this thread any more.
No, I have not bought one, but if I need to replace my 5D one day, it will rather be a 6D than any later version of the 5D.
I have played with it at the Photokina and it really felt great. Henry and I looked into the mirror box and it seemed to us that is was wider than in the 5D version. The Canon guys at the booth confirmed that. _________________ Personal forum activity on pause every now and again (due to job obligations)!

Thnaks G. Well that's something. I may unlike most users but if the camera was simply manual, I'd be happy. I never use any of the modes, automatic anything. I will only use WIFI if I get hired for some journalistic gig (highly unlikely).
Off to see how much an upgrade will cost me.
<grumble>
Upgrade is $399. So $2500. Doesn't sound like a good deal to me now. I'll get one when I can for $1500, maybe in a year? |
