135mm is not enough for me. I need a longer focal length, I have heard great things about carl zeiss jena 180mm and 200mm. What are your opinion on which telephoto to get?

CZJ 2.8/180 or Konica 3.5/200, both are really top lenses.

I used to have the CZJ 200/2.8 which was a nice lens. Massive and prone to CA if I recall correctly. If you can spend a bit more Leica APO-Telyt 180/3.4 is much smaller and better I think. But the Zeiss is very good. The 180mm may be better I am not sure.

There are many fine 200mm lenses available quite cheaply.

Some 200mm to look for -

Super or S-M-C Takumar 200/4
Preset Tele-Takumar 200/5.6 (yes, small aperture, but its a magnificent lens)
Tokina-made T-mount preset 200/4.5 - Very common under many brands
Yashinon-DX 200/4 - very handsome lens, good too.

I shoot video for wedding. So I would prefer at least f 2.8. I have already shot a wedding with pentacon 135 f 2.8 and it is barely fast enough. So I guesss it's down to carl zeiss jena 180 or 200?

Nikkor ais 180/2.8 ed
Pentax M 200/4
Olympus OM 200/4 both single coating and mc
Canon fd 200/2.8

Or pentax K 200/2.5

I have a 180 Zeiss; I don't use it. I use my smaller 200s as I find them as good.

Try Jupiter, Meyer/Pentacon or even a Chnon (get the 3.5 not the 3.3 though)

It's a very nice lens.

If you want a fast 180 then how about the Leica APO-Summicron-R 180/2.0?

It's a very nice lens.

JJ

lol, let put the price cap at $500. I'm just a student so I don't have thousands of dollars to spend on lens...yet.

180 or 200 with f/2.8 is going to be fairly expensive no matter the type or maker.

The Zeiss Sonnars seem to be well under $500 usually
I see plenty sold for about $200-300

Nikkors are more expensive, the MF ED versions are usually between $400-500

btw, can anybody explain mounts to me? it seems like contax/yashica mount and pentacon six mount cost less. Is it inferior? can I not adapt it to my canon eos?

You can get cheap Canon EOS adapters for both Pentacon and Contax/Yashica mount.

EOS mount is quite adaptable.

If you have a tigt budget then I would forget the cheaper 2.8s as in my experience, they're not really good wide open.

what do you mean by cheaper 2.8s? I'm probably gonna go with a zeiss 180 or zeiss 200 because I just want to have a zeiss in my collection. Anybody know the difference between the two?

a) Zeiss 2.8/200mm exists in M42 mount and is 'quite' rare... Although it is a good+ lens I do believe their value is due more to 'rarity' rather performance, especially wide open!!

b) Zeiss 2.8/180mm in P6 mount. There are several versions/variants. One version well regard is the 'Olympia'... From samples I believe it is a good performer... but quite heavy!

c) Zeiss 2.8/180mm in C/Y mount. I have this lens and consider it well balanced, both in performance and regarding weight. It is a very nice combo with Canon 5D2.

regards

I would question why anyone would shoot such a long lens wide open, dof is going to be small and sharpness and contrast at it's minimal for that lens.

How about the Nikkor Ais 200/4. It can be bought very cheaply. I paid about 20 euros for mine. A couple of samples.

There are plenty of good 200/4 lenses, and pretty cheap too.

But the OP wanted a large aperture lens for shooting video.
I expect he would have more tolerance for not quite perfect sharpness.

in video, sharpness is not everything, hell, canon's video are soft themselves comparing it to other camera. But I am pretty sure I want at least an f2.8

But are you really going to get good results at 2.8? dof will be small and it will be hard to keep the subjects in focus, contrast and sharpness are not optimal wide open either.

PostPosted: Tue Aug 21, 2012 4:46 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

As I understand it large apertures and narrow DOF are very desirable for video/movie work.
There are lots of very expensive large aperture cine/video lenses for a reason.

it's going to be use for the ceremony. Where the husband and wife just stays in one place. If the lighting lets me, I prefer to shoot at f4. But there are times where the chapel is so dimly lit that I need that f 2.8.

For shooting video dsrl and fast aperture 2,8, a compact and light lens must be preferred... The contax 180mm and Zuiko 180mm can be good choices for that reason. In my other post i forgot the olympus, but in general, they are very compact and decent lenses, and also important - relatively cheap! - so you can consider some Zuikos to your work.

I found olympus zuiko and contax 180mm cost around the same. So I'm just gonna go with Carl Zeiss. How's this? http://www.ebay.com/itm/370641172097?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649
