Italian online shops are beginning to accept reservations on EOS 50D.
The body only option is listed as low as 1149 Euros on one shop and 1211 Euros on another.
The first rumours spoke of a price around 1500 Euros for body only.

It is really an impressive price reduction and now it makes the 800 Euros for a new 40D not so attractive anymore - 316 Euros are a small difference if we compare the specifics of the two cameras. Of course we will have to see how the 50D performs in comparison with regards to noise. But the rest of the specs (15+ MP, 14 bit processing, new Digic 4 processor) make it already look like a no brainer.

It does seem a no brain er.
I just looked at the B+H price. They are asking $1400 usd for the body only.
That is EUR980 at today's exchange rate.
I suppose if you factor tariffs and shipping the price you have locally is still even less than the B+H price.

BTW: The price of the 40D is down to $970 so EUR680

I made a quick calculation, without the VAT the price here should be 919 Euros.
Not bad at all (I can dump the VAT I am a freelancer)

It's legal in fact. Here independent workers with a VAT number can dump the VAT from the taxes when they buy something that is related to the profession the VAT is registered for.
About the only thing nice of having a VAT number - the rest is tax tragedy Sad
