when I did it, a lot of horrible looking black-blueish colour went off.
What is the purpose of that colour, and do 35mm film also have it?

It's part of the anti-halation layer. It is supposed to keep light from reflecting, reducing contrast.
And yes, 35mm films do also have it.
For some films the presoak is strongly recommended (for instance IR film).
I do presoak and change the water until it becomes clear.

All 135 films?

Efke/Adox film doesn't have the anti-halation layer. I need to learn how
to do stand developing with Rodinal before I shoot any of this film. The
one roll I shot I had the ma and pa place develop it, and the film is very
thin, think flimsy.

I read you must use a hardening fixer with Efke.

Depends on the film, not the brand.
Some BW films with Anti-Halation Layer: Adox CMS20, Adox Ortho 25, Adox Pan 25, Rollei Pan, Rollei Ortho, Rollei IR, Rollei Retro 100, Agfa APX100, Formapan 100, Kodak T-Max 100

Fortunately some manufactures provide data sheets with information about AHU and pre-soak.

I should have specified the Adox CHS and Efke KB films have only
single layer. Thanks.
