Great DoF! Fantastic images. I really like the personality of the lens.

OK, I have to admit that looking at the pics at full size I'm not so impressed by the wide open performance.
I have a Nikkor 50/1.4 AIS (which I bought new some 15 years ago) whose performance is astounding even wide open (manual focus of course), I consider it one of my best of all lenses.
This 50/1.2 seems surely like a good quality lens stopped down, but it does not seem to perform like the 50/1.4 AIS so if I had to advice for the purchase of a Nikkor 50mm lens, I think I would still advice for the 50/1.4 AIS manual. Of course in some dark evenings situation the half stop faster 50/1.2 may still become very useful.

Oh by the way, excellent portraits in pics #1 #3 #6 by the master of portraits Smile

I suppose people not buy this kind of lenses for ultimate performance they buy for feeling they have something rare and expensive. Many of Leica lenses are also not better than competitors just more expensive. In my opinion all Nikkor lenses are great you won't disappointed any of them.

I'd like to agree to both of you. The performance wide open is not stellar, but this lens serves as some kind of status symbol which on the other hand provides the last bit (almost) of speed.

However, I like the personality of the lens (as far as I can tell from these pictures), since it grants the opportunity to shoot with a very shallow DoF and produces a rather smooth bokeh.

I think I would not buy it, because I would have to pay a lot, but if I had the chance to get it cheap, I would love to own it!

I have many of Nikkor 50mm lenses if I sell them I can cover this lens cost.I think I will keep this lens and Nikkor 50mm f2 AI. I sold already one of my copy of Nikkor 50mm f2.8 AIS and I kept a well used one.Nikkor 50mm f2 one of the sharpest Nikkor and you can get for low price.

Thanks for all those samples Atla, but I tend to agree with the lightartist and the cookie about some softness. How does it do stopped down a bit? Completely agree on the 50/2 - it was a big surprise for me, and I think I sometimes prefer it to the awesome 50/1.4.

If stopped down sharp as Nikkor 50mm f2, truly professional lens with excellent color rendering etc.

My name comes from ancient Greek and I'm not a stupid cookie, thanks for your understanding.

Orio, don't be angry. I guess he wanted to pun on the American "Oreos".
But it's easy for me to talk, I am a "lightartist". Wink
(Which, btw, is a very good interpretation from Latin...)

I know, I found these in London, too.

I'm not very keen on name puns but I can accept them from persons I am in confidence with. My ex wife had a good Canadian friend and she used to call me cookie all the time. But we knew each other well (and she reasoned it by saying that I am sweet as a cookie). Wink

From persons I don't know I don't appreciate much this kind of name jokes. Call me a traditionalist, but I believe that there are steps to follow in the interpersonal relations. I know that young people today feel they can take all freedom of speech immediately with everyone. Being an old jerk, I still believe in the value of some rules and restrictions.

Oreos

accept my apologies - I was only trying to be funny. As a newbie it was presumptuous of me. BTW I am probably old enough to be your father.

It's reminiscent of scenes of tools on tables used for dismantling certain
objects Surprised

Gosh, unfortunate misspell there, Patrick. It's simply "Orio" however,
there's nothing simple about our Orio. Wink Also, true acts of contrition
involve giving up a pinkie finger, their custom, not ours. Laughing Orio, is
45, last time we checked, so you would have to be towards 70, unless
you're talking about an Ozark marriage...

Are you from the Portland area? I was born there, but grew up in a town
in northern Idaho.

Welcome to the forum!

Careful, man! If you're an old jerk, what does that make me? Smile BTW, I agree about old-fashioned manners and respect.

Does that mean I'm not the oldest here any longer? All the best Patrick, and welcome.
