How can I turn off the shutter sound of the nex5/5n?
I am thinking to bring the nex5n to concert. So far I cannot see how I can turn off the shutter sound. The canon Gxx is silent.
What annoying sound. _________________ La migliore cura di LBA imparare una nuova lingua. Le meilleur remde de LBA est d'apprendre une nouvelle langue. La mejor cura del LBA es aprender una nueva lengua. |

Can't be done. What you hear is the actual shutter, not a imitation "shutter sound" played back through a loudspeaker like on compacts or cellphones. It has the same motor driven focal plane shutter as current Sony SLRs - and its small case size provides for less damping, so that it is even louder than some of the latter. _________________ Sevo |

Stop talking bullshit.
The sound can't be turned off completly, but the NEX-5N has a silent shutter function in the options menue somewhere under "Eye-Start-AF"!
Instead of the loud "zick-zack" sound it will only make a single much more quiet "klack".
That was the main reason for me to change from NEX-3 to NEX-5N
But it's maybe still annoying in a classic music concert, etc. _________________ I'm not a collector, I'm a tester

i have both nex5 and nex5n. nex5n has one click and sounds less, but still too loud.
It is the size i consider to take it to the concert.
I use to bring the pentax K5 with a few low light fast MF, but i have to stay out of my seat, mostly in the aisle.
The K5 is silent enough. MF gives no AF noise, no AF assist light. SR in body is excellent for low speed handhelt.
oh yah, crop factor 1.5x does matter. Consider in concert, the 50mm is pretty wide in a relative distance.
85mm gives full body, 135mm half body. 180/2.8 or 200/2.5 can frame in more, but they might be too heavy/bulky.
Too bad, the nex5n + 50/1.2, 85/1.8, 135/2.8 will fit in a small bag. _________________ La migliore cura di LBA imparare una nuova lingua. Le meilleur remde de LBA est d'apprendre une nouvelle langue. La mejor cura del LBA es aprender una nueva lengua. |

Sony advertises it as a function to reduce shutter delay, not as a low noise mode. Arguably disabling the first shutter curtain halves the number of noisy shutter curtain closing and re-tensioning events - but the volume of each event stays the same. This would help statistically (a press pit with a hundred cameras all set that way would be half as noisy), but not individually (when you are the only one firing a camera during a concert). _________________ Sevo |

Bye the way Sony announced to introduce electronical shutters for 2012.
So I guess the next NEX will have a noiseless shutter.

The NEX-7 does have an electronical shutter and still you hear a sound, because only one shutter is "electronic".
You can choose between the "NEX-7-sound" (clonk) or the tradional "NEX-sound" (clack-clonk). _________________ Personal forum activity on pause every now and again (due to job obligations)!

Been away for a while from Nexes - can someone tell me which is the most silent Nex currently?
I'm looking at least 5n.
As far as i remember Nex-3 had very loud shutter sound - no where near to E-P2 for example. _________________ Stefan
